Toronto – Civic Organizations operating in the Tigray region of Ethiopia are calling for an inclusive talk to avert war in the region and beyond as tension involving TPLF, Eritrean government and Ethiopian government is worsening.
Salsawi Weyane, an opposition political party in the region, has joined the call for talks to resolve the tension.
DW Amharic reported that the civic organizations and Salsawi Weyanie released a statement on Friday calling for peace and dialogue.
Eight civic organizations operating in the region were part of the call for peace and dialogue with the aim to reverse what appears to be an increasingly inevitable war that could further devastate the region, and the entire Horn of Africa.
“Notable political problems need to be resolved through dialogue before they transform into something worse,” the source cited the civic organizations as saying.
Particularly they underscored the political division in the Tigray region concerning.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) now appears to be in control of the region again. Last week, it undertook a “national unity” and “peace” conference.
However, civic organizations in the region are pointing out that the conferences it undertook were not inclusive, as DW reported.
The organizations stated that entities with different political views and representatives from different areas need to be part of discussions.
“We call for a genuine dialogue,” the civic organizations are cited as saying.
Salsay Woyane, an opposition party, has also reiterated its concern for war in a statement it released.
The party’s assessment of the potential outbreak of the war is similar to the civic organizations, notable political figures and other political parties in the region. It sees that the war would be one that affects the entire Horn of Africa region.
Alula Hailu, the party’s chairman, pointed out that the Tigray region has not recovered from the last war , and millions of displaced people have not yet returned to their homes.
There have been accusations that the TPLF is preparing for war. This time in alliance with Eritrea. However, both TPLF and Eritrea denied that they are preparing for war.
