Toronto – ” Starting from today, the importation of fuel-powered trucks is banned,” Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared during the Calum Natural Gas plant inauguration in South Eastern Ethiopia.
There was no indication if there was policy discussion about it or if the parliament debated it.
Tanker trucks that operate with natural gas “has a significant meaning for a country like Ethiopia that spends foreign currency,” he added. He explained that the gas-powered trucks are capable of making Addis Ababa-Djibouti round trip in a single fill.
He also stated that his government will support investors, including with duty free importation, for those investors importing trucks that work with gas, as opposed to fuel.
He called on investors to “help hasten economic growth by importing gas powered trucks.”
He also stated that his government will be deploying about 2000 gas powered buses for services in the capital Addis Ababa and for trans-region service.
The measure is expected to cut down transportation costs “at least by 50 percent,” as he puts it. “It will help support low income citizens” by cutting their transportation expenses, he added.
There has been a similar transformation in connection with the use of eclectic power for vehicles. In January 2024, Ethiopia introduced regulation banning gasoline powered vehicles in favor of electric vehicles.

That is great news for the nation which suffers the most from the effects of fossil fuels. It also shows how our Somali brothers and sisters are demonstrating more maturity just like their Afar neighbors and much more than those in Tigray, Amhara and Oromia regions and they are already quietly reaping the fruits of their wisdom. Right on brothers and sisters, right on!!!
