Toronto – A massive detention of youth has reportedly been underway overnight across the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
According to Ethio Focus, one of Ethiopian News Youtube channels with sources from across the country, Yeka, Cherkos, Arada, Addis Ketema, Nifas Silk and many other sub cities were targeted in what appeared like an indiscriminate crackdown on the youth.
The number of those detained so far is unspecified. The Federal police have not released confirming or denying the story.
Based on a report from the source, a specific pattern is observed regarding the identities of the security forces deployed to undertake the massive arrest in the city. Many of them are said to be ethnic Oromos.
Another point known so far is that those detained from different parts of the city are transported to Kaliti in the outskirts of Addis Ababa. They are currently in the warehouse of Ethiopia’s Labour and Social Affairs Ministry.
Estimates by the size of the warehouse seem to suggest that thousands of youths are detained.
Speculations are emerging that the government could turn the massive detention to a forced conscription and transport them to a military training facility.
News of the detention emerged as the government released two abducted journalists overnight in the capital. As their release makes headlines, it appears that the massive detention was already underway overnight.
In a related development, the Addis Ababa city Administration has reportedly demolished today a clothing market facility in Kolfe Atana Tera locality of Addis Ababa. According to the source, ethnic Guraghe businesses are impacted by the development.

”Estimates by the size of the warehouse seem to suggest that thousands of youths are detained”
Really? too fast for judgment…how about if there are only 7 criminals inside that huge warehouse you described? Did your six-grade teacher told you about not to judge a book by its cover? Just underlining on the blind guess.
