Toronto – Yonas Amare and Andulsemed Mohammed – journalists who were abducted about ten days ago – are reportedly released.
According to Ethiopian Reporter, they were released on Friday in the evening.
Yonas Amare is a senior editor and producer with decades of experience who works for the Ethiopian Reporter.
He was abducted in Koye Feche, Sheger city, by armed security wearing face masks. His whereabouts has been unknown for the past ten days ;he did appear in court.
Abdulsemed Mohammed has been hosting “Kidame Gebeya Show” on Ahadu Radio. He was reportedly taken by security forces without arrest warrant from 22 areas of Addis Abeba. LIke Yonas Amare, his families reported that they were unable to know his whereabouts.
The Federal police did not remark about the forced disappearance. The Committee To Protect Journalists (CPJ) this week released a statement condemning their abduction.
While it became clear that they were abducted by the government forces, there is no clue until now why the government resorted to the abduction of the two journalists.
The journalists are yet to share their ordeals to the public assuming that they were not released on conditions of not sharing information about their abductions.
The press freedom in Ethiopia has been under attack for a few years now.
When Abiy Ahmed was elected as the leader of the now defunct Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Party (EPRDF) in April 2018, broadening the democratic space in the country was one of the key pledges made as part of projected political reform in the country.

All Glory to The Almighty these two family men are released into the arms of their loved ones. The Reprter English language website is one of my go-to websites based in the old country for news about Ethiopia since I discovered them a decade ago. Their presentation is well sourced and as independent as they can. It is a huge relief to hear they are alive and back home.
