Toronto – Last week, the office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia announced the appointment of Addisu Arega as Minister for Agriculture without mentioning why Girma Amente was removed and what the next step is.
Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs unveiled that the former minister is taking a position within the African Union. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government released a letter of appreciation for the decision the A.U. Chairperson in appointing Girma Amente as African Union Permanent Representative with the United Nations and The World Trade Organization.
The Ministry sees the decision as an indication of “importance” the African Union attaches to Ethiopia’ leadership role in the continent.
“Ethiopia appreciates the decision of the chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mr. Mohamoud Ali Youssef to appoint Girma Amente to this important position, which underscores the significance the Union attaches to Ethiopia’s role in representing the continent at International fora,” The Ministry wrote in a letter it released on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has not yet remarked, at the time of this writing, on the tragic boat accident in Yemen this week which is said to have claimed well over 140 Ethiopian Migrants. The story dominated mainstream media outlets. Also, four major Ethiopian opposition parties expressed grief in a joint letter they released on Monday.
