Girma Amente’s removal came as the ruling party claims to undertake campaign to transform the sector with the aim to ensure food security

Toronto – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed Addisu Arega as Minister of Agriculture.
The office of the prime minister announced the news in a single short sentence. No reference was made to Girma Amente, who has been serving as minister since January 2023.
As of February 2024, he has also been appointed as a member of the Board of Management of Development Bank of Ethiopia.
Before his roles in the Ministerial portfolio, Girma was in the Oromia regional state structure as Head of Housing and Urban
Development Bureau of the Oromia Regional State, and the Coordinator of Infrastructure for Oromia Regional Government.
News of his removal was unexpected and his next role is unspecified. It has been customary for Abiy Ahmed’s administration, as was the case with his predecessor EPRDF administration, to assign officials removed from the Ministerial portfolio to diplomatic mission roles.
Addisu, the new Minister, has been one of the senior ruling Prosperity Party officials in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Among other roles, he has experience as a senior political cadre and in rural development roles.
Abiy Ahmed’s administration has been signing cooperation agreements in the agriculture sector with a range of countries. The recent one was with the government of Italy whose Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was on a three day working visit in Ethiopia.
Food security is among the top priority areas for the agriculture sector in the country.
