Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Adey Getachew, the wife of former footballer Alelegn Azene, and Lungo Lukas, her sister’s husband, have been sentenced to 16 and 15 years of imprisonment without parole, respectively, for their involvement in the murder of Ethiopia’s soccer star.
Alelegn Azene was a player for the Ethiopian National Team and Bahir Dar Kenema Football Club, which is competing in Ethiopia’s Premier League.
The death of Alelegne Azene was initially reported as “suicide” but later police made arrests initially his siblings and then the spouse.
However, the Gamo Zone Justice Department last week announced that police criminal investigations revealed Alelegn was murdered.
According to the police investigation, the murder was committed by his spouse, Adey Getachew, and his wife’s sister’s husband, Lungo Lucas.
It is recalled that the Gamo Zone High Court, in a previous session, had found the defendants guilty, confirming with human witnesses and material evidence that they “systematically” murdered the 26-year-old Alelegn Azene on March 26, 2024 in Nech Sar Kebele (neighborhood) Development Area, Arba Minch city, making it appear as if he had committed suicide.
The Gamo Zone High Court, in its ruling today, passed down sentencing, imposing 16 years of imprisonment without parole on the first defendant, his wife Adey Getachew, and 15 years of imprisonment without parole on the second defendant, Lungo Lucas, for committing the murder.
However, the reason for the dispute between the deceased Alelegn Azene and his wife, and how the murder was carried out, has not yet been disclosed in detail.
Alelegn played as a midfielder for the Ethiopian National Team in the CHAN 2022 tournament.
Alelegn, who was described as a good defender due to his skills, physical stature for the position and agility in matches, was reported to have died just two weeks after getting married. He was among the highly paid players in Ethiopia,
The player had played for Arba Minch Football Club since his childhood and also spent time as a player for Hawassa City Football Club.
Alelegn, who was 23 years old, was also nominated as one of the top five players in the Premier League in 2015 E.C.
