Toronto – In the latest string of massacres against civilians, the Ethiopian Defense Force has reportedly killed at least 11 civilians and wounded five others in Gondar – Amhara region of Ethiopia.
The incident took place on Sunday in Gedebye Gondar around 4 p.m. in the afternoon, according to Ethiopian Media Services.
The source spoke to eyewitnesses from the town in Ethiopia’s North Western area. From what the eyewitnesses say, the Ethiopian Defense force took out the victims from their homes and shot them – a practice reminiscent of the massacre from Merwai in Gojjam – among other areas.
The condition of those wounded in the attack is life threatening. The victims are mostly young people. However, an eight year old child and an 80 year old man are also among the victims.
Witnesses who spoke to EMS say the massacre was a retaliatory action against the killings of two government soldiers in the town. A day or so before the incident, Fano forces sneaked into the town and killed two Ethiopian defense forces.
The civilian defense force massacre does not have any connection with the Fano forces, the sources added.
Those killed in the attack are laid to rest on Monday in Gedebeye town. The Ethiopian Defense Force has not remarked about the incident at the time of this writing.
Over the course of the war in the Amhara region in the last two years the defense force has a record of committing similar massacres, and some of them are recorded by human rights organizations.
As to the latest massacre, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has not yet released an alert of report on Gedebeye massacre.
