The number of ethnic Tigrayans allegedly arrested in Addis Ababa unspecified

Toronto – Salsay Woyane, ethnic Tigray opposition party operating mainly in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, on Monday said that it has received reports that Ethiopian government is arbitrarily arresting “Tigrayan civilians,” in the capital Addis Ababa.
“Salsay Weyane Tigray is receiving alarming reports of innocent Tigrayan civilians being arbitrarily rounded up and unlawfully detained by Ethiopian security forces in Addis Ababa. This reprehensible act constitutes a grave violation of fundamental human rights and represents a deeply disturbing regression to the period of the genocidal war on Tigray,” The party stated in a Press Release it shared on its social media page.
The party alleges that the persecution is “based solely on ethnic identity” and called it ” unjustifiable under any circumstances” It sees it as an action that undermines the effort for peace.
Salsay Weyane urged the Federal government to “immediately cease these indiscriminate persecutions against innocent civilians. We demand the prompt and unconditional release of all individuals unlawfully detained in mass arrests across various areas of Addis Ababa.”
The party was unspecified as to how many ethnic Tigreans were victims of the alleged arbitrary arrest. It is also unclear as to where they are arrested.
At the time of this writing, the Ethiopian government has not remarked on the allegation from Salsay Woyane.
The possibility of another round of war between Abiy Ahmed’s Administration and the Tigray people’s Liberation Front (TPLF) appears more likely as the latter is reportedly working with the Eritrean government with a plan to open war in the region. Salsay Woyane has been criticizing the TPLF over activities which it says will bring another conflict to the region. It also criticized the federal government over “failing Tiray.”
The Federal government has a track record of arbitrarily detaining citizens on alleged grounds of security concerns. However, in most cases the arrests are based on ethnic identity , and recently based on nationality. Thousands of Ethnic Amharas had been subjected to arbitrary arrest in the capital Addis Ababa and parts of the Oromia region.
More recently, there have been arbitrary arrests against Eritrean nationals living in the capital Addis Ababa.
