Toronto – U.S. president Donald Trump is making a new claim about the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam( GERD) . In a message he shared on Truth Social highlighting conflict resolution efforts his country has been undertaking in Africa, he made reference to GERD in a way triggering a question that Abiy Ahmed’s Administration, which is believed to be a client government to the United States, will have to answer.
In the part of the message that is related to the Ethiopian Dam , Trump stated ” …I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for keeping Peace between Egypt and Ethiopia (A massive Ethiopian built dam, stupidly financed by the United States of America, substantially reduces the water flowing into The Nile River)…” He made the remarks days after formally meeting the newly appointed Ethiopian Ambassador at the White House.
It is unclear whether president Trump is just having fun on his social media platform ( Truth Social appears to be owned by Trump Media & Technology Group Corp.) or if his message is just meant to trigger a controversy.
There has been no known evidence that the United States has been funding Ethiopia’s Mega Dam project whose primary objective is, as stated by the Ethiopian government, to make electricity accessible to the section of the people that does not have one. Over 60 percent of the Ethiopian population does not have access to electricity.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project has been painted as one that is entirely financed locally. The government has been selling bonds and raised hundreds of billions of birr to finance the project. Mr. Trump’s claim that the United States “financed” the project does not seem to have any evidence, at least until now. Agency to mobilize resources from local sources was established several years ago.
The Ethiopian government has not yet remarked on the President’s claim. The other piece of information that Donald Trump shared about the flow of water seems to be misleading too. There has been no reports from experts so far that the dam ” substantially reduces the water flowing into The Nile River)…”
The project is reportedly completed and is expected to be inaugurated probably on the eve of the Ethiopian New Year despite continued resentment from Egypt and Sudan. During his first term, Donald Trump appeared in support of Egypt and insinuated that it could blow up the dam.

Ethiopian FM should summon US ambassador to clarify about Trump’s stupid claims by saying “A massive Ethiopian built dam, stupidly financed by the United States of America, substantially reduces the water flowing into The Nile River ”
This congenital liar and war-criminal, needs to be put in his place as a liar and asked to take back his lies and stop starting conflict where there is none!
The Ethiopian government has to prove its repeated statement that ‘GERD was built fully financed by the contributions by the people of Ethiopia’. and challenge Trump’s lies, once and for all.
An Egyptian publication recently expressed fear that more water will be flowing downstream during this coming rainy season…(the same article was posted here on Borkena not long ago…)
Both false points made by Trump must be challenged immoderately via its embassy in the country.
Be well.
This article tries to insinuate the President for something he did not say. Where in his social media post he told Egypt to go in and ‘blow up’ the dam? He may be talking about the possibility of it and he is not alone with that assumption. How many times did the leaders of Egypt threaten Ethiopia saying all options including military are on the table? If you try to count that you will run out of breath. Egypt is the one that has been threatening to do harm to the dam. But those leaders know very well that any harm to the dam may lead them to losing the river forever.
So, don’t try to put words in the President’s comment. Meanwhile, the new Ethiopian Ambassador to Washington has work cut out for him. He should work closely with the State Department officials to clarify the latest about the dam. I hope everyone will be invited to the official inauguration of the dam.
Peace y’all!!!
That specific information is related to his 2020 remark. You should be able to get related content on that topic if you search the site.

Dear Account,
Thank you for being so civil in responding to my email. This is how all discussions about any affair of political nature should be conducted. You name any ethnic group of the old country. It is in our deep rooted culture but since the late 1960’s after the pandemic of the demonic scriptures of Marx, Lenin and Mao, it has been besieged by commies and their offshoots bigots and connivers. We should always be open and tolerant to honest opinions.
As you suggested I did some research about the President’s remark about the dam in 2020 and I found several but similar narratives in the archives. This is what I found.
‘President Trump said Egypt would not be able to live with the dam and might “blow up” the construction.’ I did not find anything in the President’s comment that urged/encouraged Egypt to blow up the dam. He is/was not alone in that assumption. We all thought Egypt might try to do that when its leaders threatened with similar action when it told the old country all options are on the table including military. What do the leaders in Al-Qahirah mean by ‘military’? They will not even think abound sending ground forces because they know very well how that will pan out. They will end up being the butt of the entire world. So, their best and only option is to send some of their panhandled bomber jets and damage the dam. That is what they plan to do. President Trump was/is not urging Egypt to do that. He was/is talking about what the leaders of Egypt may try to do. That is how I see it.
Now the work by the new Ethiopian Ambassador is cut out for him. He should discuss all matters about the dam with The Secretary of the State H.E. Marco Rubio and other department officials behind the closed doors. This is not something that can/should be cleared out in the media since the media can sometimes be biased.
As far as the financing of the dam, I don’t think that is a pressing matter. We can say a thing or two about it because it is a moot point at this time. The dam is almost completed and there is even talk about its Inauguration Day coming up soon.
Thank you again for being so kind and civil. Borkena is of the two websites among our Diaspora where I get my daily fill about affairs concerning that gem of the colored called Ethiopia.
Hang around because we need you! Blessings to you and your family!
I may also add that if news of the inauguration in the coming months this year is true, the organizers should invite dignitaries from all corners of the world to the monumental occasion. That includes Egypt and its sounding board, the Arab League. This dam was to be started and completed during the reign of the late Emperor in the 1960’s. Egypt used its beasts of burden that began in 1959 which created a perfect distraction and sucked up the resources in the nation’s coffers. This time, that ain’t gonna happen. It is almost done without adversely affecting the flow of water from The Blue Nile to the Sudan or Egypt. I did not make this up and it was experts in hydrology who have attested to that. Also it was in the recent news out of Cairo that Egypt has decided to proceed with building a spanking new mega city of more than 5 million people in the middle of a desert by diverting some of the flow of water from the Nile River in its territory.. That makes no sense if the flow of water is adversely affected/reduced by the dam. The leaders of Egypt just like many African leaders have a history telling tall tales. Some of you may be old enough to remember how the then President of Egypt lied to its major donor, The USA, in 1985 about the whereabouts of the terrorist hijackers of Achille Lauro. He told them and the media that the terrorists had left Egypt hours ago that day when the fact was he was hiding them inside Egypt. Even today, they have not stopped lying to Good Ole USA. We all know by now what they were cooking up with Menendez with gold bars and crisp cold cash. The 71 year old Menendez is heading to the slammer for 11 years and as the first U.S. senator convicted of acting as an agent of a foreign government. Meanwhile, those who got him and his wife in trouble are enjoying their sugar loaded halawa in their opulent palace in Cairo.
Trump’s new claim about the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam is a blatant lie. The dam is being constructed entirely with Ethiopia’s own resources, without any financial contribution from the American government or other foreign entities.
Moreover, the dam will not reduce a single drop of water from the shares of Sudan and Egypt. In fact, it is unjust for Ethiopia to be expected to give away all the water that originates within its own territory. The dam is designed solely to generate electricity, allowing the river to continue its natural flow as usual.
Blessed love to all.
Donald Trump and the USA are liars and life-threatening bullies. Africans should be very careful of biggots, connivers, and economic terrorists. The US are not about to colonize or subdue us over their in any form.
