Toronto – Donald Trump has accepted Binalf Andualem , newly appointed Ethiopian Ambassador to the United States.

Binalf served as  Minister for Peace, theoretically the second most powerful institution in Ethiopia, for a few years until he was suddenly and quietly removed to be appointed as Ethiopian Ambassador to the U.S. in February this year.  He does not have an academic or career background in diplomacy.

The Ethiopian Embassy in the United States on Wednesday shared the story on its social media page.

Binalf  was formally accepted at the White House in a diplomatic ceremony.

“This meeting marks the beginning of many future discussions. The potential for a strong partnership in areas such as peace, security, and economic cooperation between the two countries is limitless. Ethiopia and the United States have enjoyed a robust relationship that spans over 120 years. During this occasion, the Ambassador also had the opportunity to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio,”  the embassy wrote.

As is the case with some European countries, the diplomatic  relation between Ethiopia and the United States was established over one hundred twenty years ago.

The Ethiopian Embassy in the U.S. saw the welcome ceremony as one that “reflects the longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and the United States.”

It is unclear whether the ceremony was on Wednesday. Trump left the G7 meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada before it was concluded.

The United States has been very influential on Ethiopia after the fall of colonel Mengistu Haileamriam in 1991. However, its influence has been growing even stronger after Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018 to the point that Ethiopia is resembling more like a proxy state.  Eritrean President openly accused Ethiopia of being a proxy state during his speech on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the independence of his country.

The U.S. , through the U.S. aid, has been supporting several development programs in the areas of education, agriculture and governance – among other things.
