Toronto – The Sidama region of state of Ethiopia – one of the news regional states – on Thursday announced that it lifted the immunity of Alemayehu Timothoes.
The regional state announced that it was during the emergency meeting of the regional council. The regional state is making several allegations against Alemayehu Timotheos. He was serving as head of the region’s peace and security office.
The region’s communication office reported Alemayehu was involved in corruption. The region alleges that he was involved in “issuing licenses” for drug trafficking and illicit trade and circulation of firearms. Accepting a huge sum of cash (unspecified) for his personal benefit is another allegation the former top security official of the region is facing.
He is also implicated in expanding illegal trade based on arrangement for a personal gain. The region made an even stronger allegation. It says Alemayehu made “repeated efforts to undertake a coup against the regional state.”
Mato Maru, the region’s head of the Justice department, disclosed the allegations to members of the council during the emergency meeting that was called to lift the immunity of Alemayehu.
The disclosure from the region’s communication bureau claims evidence from several sources were “gathered” and “verified” from the council moves to lift the parliamentary immunity of Alemayehu.
It is said that the parliament discussed the allegations before “unanimously” voting to lift the immunity of the former security chief.
At the time of this writing, it is unclear when Alemayehu appears in court and if he has a lawyer. His side of the story is yet to be heard via his lawyer.
Sidama region is said to be one of the reginal states where corruption has been rampant including at higher levels of government officials. Sources like Ethiopia Media Service report that senior officials including the regional president Desta Lendamo are involved in corruption. It is also reported that there has been division and power struggle within the regional officials for several months now. Borkena has not independently verified the story.
