Toronto – Ethiopia’s long-distance supremacy was on full display at the Shanghai Diamond League as Berihu Aregawi stormed to a commanding victory in the men’s 5000 meters, leading a historic podium sweep for his nation on Saturday.

The 24-year-old phenom, already a decorated star in the world of distance running, blazed across the finish line in a seasonal best and meet record time of 12:50.45, further cementing his status among the sport’s elite. His compatriots Girma Kuma (12:50.45) and Mezgebu Sime (12:51.86) secured silver and bronze, respectively, ensuring an all-Ethiopian triumph.

When asked if he had full confidence in his blistering final-lap speed, Aregawi responded with a grin: “Yes.”

“I am so happy,” he added, his eyes already set on future challenges. The Paris Olympic 10,000m silver medalist revealed plans to contest the 10,000m at the Ethiopian trials and hinted at a potential double-distance assault at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (September 13-21).

Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir and Uganda’s Keneth Kiprop trailed behind in fourth and fifth, unable to disrupt Ethiopia’s dominance.

Aregawi’s victory in Shanghai is just the latest feat in a career already glittering with accolades. Over the past six years, he has carved his name into the annals of distance running with remarkable consistency :

Back-to-back Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza titles (2024, 2025)
Paris Olympic 10,000m silver medalist
Third-fastest man in 3000m history (7:21.28, Silesia Diamond League 2024)

Aregawi’s versatility shines across surfaces—whether on the track, roads, or cross-country terrain, he remains a formidable force.

While Ethiopia ruled the 5000m, Kenya reasserted its steeplechase dominance with a clean sweep in the men’s 3000m steeplechase:

Abrham Sime (Kenya) – 8:07.92 (SB)
Edmund Serem (Kenya) – 8:08.68
Simon Kiprop Koech (Kenya) – 8:09.05

The Diamond League’s Shanghai stop delivered thrilling races, setting the stage for an electrifying season ahead. With Aregawi eyeing a Tokyo double and Kenya’s steeplechasers in top form, the road to the 2025 World Championships promises even more fireworks.
