Celebrated Ethiopian Athlete Tigist Assefa breaks Woman Only Marathon World Record in London

Toronto – Ethiopian Athlete Tigest Assefa on Sunday shattered the women only marathon race in London. She pulled out from the leading pack when she was ten kilometers to the finishing line. Kenyan competitor Joyciline Jepkosge put up a resistance but did not last long.
“she pulled away from Kenyan Joyciline Jepkosgei just after the two-hour mark and won by a comfortable 2:53,” reported MSN sports.
Tigist crossed the finishing line in 02:15:50 setting a new world record in the Woman only Marathon race. It was the Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir who was holding the record after she clocked 2:16:16 at London Last year.
Joyciline finished second in 02:18:44.
Ethiopian born Sifan Hassan who is running for The Netherlands finished third clocking 02:19:00.
Haven Hailu, another Ethiopian athlete, finished the race fourth after she crossed the finishing line in 02:19:17 – just 17 seconds after Sifan.
Last year, it was the Kenyan Athlete Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir who broke the record when she clocked 2:16:16.
Tigist Assefa is also the holder of the second fastest marathon time. She run 2:11:53 in 2023 in Berlin which was the world record at the time. The fastest Woman Marathon time is 2:09:56 and it is the Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich who holds after claiming the title in the Chicago Marathon in October 2024.
Meanwhile, Kenya and Uganda dominated this year’s Men’s Marathon in London. Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe. He finished the distance in 2:02:27. Ugandan Athlete Jacob Kiplimo claimed the silver title in 2:03:37 hours. Another Kenyan Athlete Alexander Mutiso Munyao finished third clocking. 2:04:20
Ethiopia’s Olympic hero Tamrat Tola finished fifth in 2:04:42 hours.
