Toronto – Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party on Friday announced that its executive committee is holding a two days long meeting.
The Prime Minister himself, who is president of the party, made the announcement on his social media page.
“As of this afternoon and over the next two days, members of the Prosperity Party Executive Committee will convene for the Party’s ordinary meeting to deliberate on key national priorities and party-centred thematic issues,” he wrote.
No further detail is provided as to what the “key national priority” constitutes. Over the past few months, there has been a growing concern that Abiy Ahmed’s government might go into war against Eritrea. Ethiopia’s government has been indirectly accusing Eritrea of working with Debretsion’s led faction of the TPLF with a plan to stir conflict in the region – allegations that Eritrea and the Debretsion’s group denied.
The party that enjoyed massive support in the first year of its formation in 2019 has experienced a growing public discontent and legitimacy crisis. It has been widely criticized over the growing security crisis, devastating wars and growing cost of living crisis in the country.
According to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the party has about 15 million registered members in the country.
The party prides itself as one that is “tirelessly” working to transform Ethiopia to a “prosperous nation.” The party takes credit for urban development projects – which uprooted hundreds of thousands of residents in the capital Addis Ababa and other cities. It has also been engaged in some infrastructure development focusing on the tourism sector. But the task of restoring security and maintaining law , and order in the country remained, it appears, a challenging task to the Prosperity Party.
