Toronto, Canada-The Amhara International Alliance (AIA) has issued an urgent statement condemning a deadly drone strike carried out by the Abiy Ahmed-led federal government in Gedeb Kebele of Enarj and Enawga District, located in the East Gojjam Zone of Ethiopia’s Amhara region. The attack, which occurred on April 16 reportedly claimed the lives of more than 120 civilians, including women and children.

“This was a brutal and targeted attack on innocent people. These were not combatants. These were peaceful Amhara civilians—mothers, children, and elders—who were killed in their own homes by a government drone,” the Alliance said in its press release.

The organization stated that the federal government’s campaign of aerial and ground-based attacks in the Amhara region has intensified in recent months and that the Enarj and Enawga strike is not an isolated incident.

“The bloodthirsty Prosperity Party regime, frustrated by its military failures against Fano resistance, is now retaliating by launching drone strikes on civilians. This shows the true face of a government waging war not just on a group, but on an entire people,” the statement reads.

The Alliance further alleged that similar drone or coordinated assaults have taken place in other Amhara towns and districts including Merawi, Birkat, Sayint, Minjar, and Ebinat. These attacks, it said, form a pattern of ethnically motivated violence rooted in systemic anti-Amhara sentiment.

“These atrocities are not random. They are politically calculated acts of collective punishment—an attempt to suppress and terrorize the Amhara population through indiscriminate violence,” the Alliance asserted.

The statement emphasized that the federal government is using advanced weaponry to carry out what it describes as “revenge operations” against civilians.

“The Abiy regime is raining bombs from the sky and bullets on the ground. Innocent lives are being lost daily. The world cannot stay silent any longer.”

Calling on the international community, the Amhara International Alliance urged the United Nations, international human rights organizations, and foreign governments to take immediate action.

“We demand an independent international investigation into the drone strike in East Gojjam and all related massacres in the Amhara region. The government must be held liable for these crimes against humanity,” the group declared.

The statement also appealed to members of the Amhara diaspora to mobilize and amplify international advocacy, urging unity in seeking justice and protecting the lives of fellow Amharas at home.

“We call on our diaspora around the world to join us in this struggle for justice. And to the global public—we ask you to extend your support to those who have suffered and continue to suffer.”
