Toronto – Ethiopia’s National Security Council, the country’s highest decision-making body on security matters, convened a meeting on Wednesday.

In a post-meeting statement, the council claimed that attempts “to impose will forcefully have been foiled,” implying military success against armed groups. However, this assertion contradicts the reality on the ground, as much of the Amhara region remains under Fano control, and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) continues to operate across Oromia.

The statement also accused unspecified groups of collaborating with “enemies” of Ethiopia, identifying three entities—two of which appear to be media outlets and opposition parties—as “obstacles to peace and prosperity.”

Several opposition politicians interpret the council’s remarks as a precursor to a broader crackdown on dissent, whether organized or individual.

Megabi Beluy Abraham, deputy chairperson of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), has been increasingly critical of the ruling Prosperity Party’s policies. His party highlights the government’s failure to address the country’s security crisis, protect citizens’ right to life, and mitigate socioeconomic harm caused by urban development projects.

“Honestly speaking, it raises more questions about where this country is headed,” Megabi Beluy told Ethiopian Media Services on Wednesday in response to the council’s statement.

He cited the ruling party’s history of arbitrary arrests targeting activists and politicians engaged in peaceful resistance. For instance, organizers of a planned anti-war demonstration in Addis Ababa in November 2024—including himself—were arrested on allegations of attempting to “overthrow” the government.

Megabi Beluy views the latest statement as groundwork for further arrests of peaceful dissidents. “When you close the door to peaceful struggle, you open more doors to armed struggle,” he warned.

According to him, the Prosperity Party “is not peace-loving.” The party is boldly asserts that the ruling party is the source of “all problems in the country.”

EPRP is not alone. Other opposition parties accuse Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government of “obsession with making wars.”

EPRP called on the government to respect the constitution.

Abiy Ahmed, now in power for seven years, has faced credible allegations of widespread human rights violations, documented by international observers. His administration oversaw one of Ethiopia’s most devastating conflicts (2020–2022), with an estimated one million lives lost. Currently, his government is waging full-scale wars in the Amhara and Oromia regions.
