Toronto – The Amhara Regional State is alleging that Fano forces attacked trucks.

Desalegn Tasew, head of the Amhara Regional State Peace and Security Office, who spoke to state-owned media in the region, is quoted as saying that the trucks were traveling from Gondar to Bahir Dar.

Six trucks were burned in Libo Kemkem District, Tara Gedam Kebele, near Addis Zemen town. DW Amharic cited the source to report that the trucks were carrying oilseeds. One truck carries up to 380 quintals of oilseeds. The number of trucks traveling between Gondar and Bahir Dar was 16.

The trucks were escorted by security forces, but it is unspecified if the escort forces survived the attack. An informer, who reportedly spoke on condition of anonymity, said there used to be robbery and looting in the area without specifying who the gunmen are. However, there was no incident where trucks were burned to ashes.

Fano forces have been accusing the government of organizing gunmen in the name of Fano forces to tarnish the image of the Fano movement, which has massive support in the region. A military operation the government intended to complete in a few weeks is still underway after well over a year and a half. Observers greatly attribute this to the support that Fano forces enjoy in the region.

Another resident said, “I do not think the vehicles were burned due to robbery.” They see the incident as an effort to collect levy fees from businesses.

Gunmen operating in the area are reportedly resentful that businesses pay for government escorts.
