Toronto – Teachers in the Tigray region of Ethiopia are reportedly suing the Federal government of Ethiopia and Tigray Region Interim Administration over unpaid salaries.
The teachers are claiming 17 months of unpaid salary. According to DW Amharic report, the Teacher’s Association in the region have been pursuing the matter and have appealed to the Prime Minister to resolve the matter before the move to sue the government.
Teachers and other public servants in the region did not receive their salaries for many months during the war between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Abiy Ahmed’s Federal government.
They have been holding a peaceful protest about it, and there were strikes in some parts of the region as well, according to DW Amharic report.
The government pledged to pay out the salaries following a series of protests and persistent demands. However, it is not implemented to date.
It is Tigray Region’s Teachers Association that is taking the matter to court. Negesti Gared, Deputy president of the Association, told DW Amharic that the association’s effort to resolve the matter – apparently through administrative measures – was not a success.
The Association took the matter to a high court in Tigray. Dawit Gebremichael is representing the Association at the High Court in Tigray.
He told DW Amharic at that Tigray Region Interim Administration, Tigray Region Education Office, Tigray Region Finance Office and Federal Government Ministry For Finance are being sued.
“If there is law, we believe that the teacher’s salary will be paid,” Nigsti Gared is quoted as saying.
Teachers’ salary has been a problem in other parts of Ethiopia too – even in areas where there has been no conflict. The Hadya and Wolaita zone in South Ethiopia have been facing similar problems. In December 2023, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission released a statement regarding the issue. The problem has been persisting until recent times.
This year the Ethiopian government announced a salary increment to help ease the unbearable cost of living for public servants but latest reports indicate that its implementation is delayed. No time line is indicated as to how long it will be delayed.
