Toronto – Mikhail Bogdanove, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, is on a working visit to Ethiopia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MFAE) on Monday disclosed that Mr.  Mikhail held talks with Taye Atske-Selassie, Ethiopia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, in the latter’s office in Addis Ababa.

A picture released by the Ministry shows the visiting Russian Official accompanied by Yevgeny Terekhin, Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia.

Discussing ways of strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries is why Mr.  Mikhail Bogdanove is in Ethiopia.

The Ministry said that the two sides explored possible ways to strengthen economic and political relations. Russia and Ethiopia “noted the importance of deepening cooperation in the BRICS framework.” Last week, Ethiopia took part in the BRICS forum in Moscow and it was Nebiyu Tedla, Spokesperson of MFAE, who represented Ethiopia.  Ethiopia was accepted to BRICS as a member state at the beginning of this year.

MFAE cited Taye Atseke-Selassie as stating that ” the two countries should scale up cooperation in technology transfer and capacity-building arenas. The discussion between the two sides included national, regional, and continental peace and security matters.”

With well over 100 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries have been discussing cooperation in a range of areas including in the development of nuclear energy. In 2021,  a memorandum of understanding was signed in Russia aimed at what was said then “developing skills and shaping public opinion on Nuclear Energy. ” But the agreement to develop nuclear energy in Ethiopia was reached in 2018 when Workeneh Gebeyehu, currently Secretary of IGAD, was the Minister for MFAE.

Abiy Ahmed’s administration appears to be mostly dominated by pro-U.S. and its allies officials and it remains  to be seen if Russia’s effort to strengthen economic and political cooperation will take root.

The U.S. government- whose diplomatic relation with Ethiopia is also over 100 years – claims that it has  been “investing”  in Ethiopia funding a range of “development” projects. There has also been a noticeable effort on the part of the U.S. government to directly forge relations with ethnic based regional states particularly the Tigray regional government of Ethiopia in the North. There has been a noticeable trend of Americanization of Ethiopian institutions – including the media – since Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018.
