EPRP Calls For Ethiopia Wide Protest Over The Situation In The Country, Election

Toronto – Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), one of the major opposition parties, on Thursday called for a nationwide protest.

It is planned for May 8, 2026 – about a month before the 7th general election.

The current situation in the country and the election itself are core agenda items the protest will amplify.

The party has been stating that there is no enabling environment to undertake a federal election.

The ongoing conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions and the developing situations in the Tigray region in North Ethiopia are among the factors that the opposition parties cite as reasons why the election can not take place.

EPRP also questions the free and fairness of the election and its credibility – apparently based on pre-election activities including restrictions and intimidation of party members and candidates. Two days ago, the party’s official and a candidate were arrested in Dire Dawa, according to a report from the party.  There have been similar instances in South Ethiopia as members of Coalition for Ethiopian Unity (CEU) to which EPRP is a member were intimidated by security forces.

Journalists, politicians and human rights activists have been arrested, and private media outlets have been under pressure from the government, EPRP added.

The ruling Prosperity Party on the other hand, as the Prime Minister stated at the Ethiopian Parliament in his last appearance, paints a flowering picture that the upcoming election will be the “best” the country has ever seen.

“The election is one that consolidates dictatorship and deceiving show,” EPRP said in a message intended to the Ethiopian People.

The protests are planned to take place in Addis Ababa, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Hawassa, Assosa, Adama, Ambo, Dire Dawa and Harar.

“We oppose a process that causes continuity of people’s suffering,” EPRP added in its message.

In an interview with Borkena last week, Mistresilassie Tamrat, EPRP secretary said the party could withdraw from the election.

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has not yet responded to EPRP’s claim that there is no enabling environment for the election.

The ruling party, which allegedly has control over the National Electoral Board, has not responded to EPRP’s accusation.

  1. If this call for a nationwide public protest materializes and citizens lost their lives or severely injured. I will be holding both the regime and those who call for the demonstrations equally responsible. Certain opposition parties such as the EPRP do not seem to abandon their decades old fantasy to be rulers by way of urban insurrection as prescribed by their idol Lenin. You can hear them moaning and in a way bragging about the May Day massacre in Addis/Finfinnee in the late 1970’s. At that time they egged and urged the young including underage children to go out in the streets to protest knowing for fact that the bloodthirsty Mengistu would use his machine guns and he just did that to the last shell in the clips mowing down hundreds to death. But others like the EPLF had instructed Eritrean to stay at home and they did just that saving their lives to see another day. This was told by the former members of the then opposition parties.

But there are some out there who still fantasize and glorify that deadly mistake. There should not be additional proof that the current regime would kill when threatened. There is a mountain of evidence about that. So why call for demonstrations knowing for fact that the thugs embedded in the regimes security outfit would kill? Why? That would be because it is just in individuals’ fantasies. Urban insurrection will not work in the old country. Ask those who tried that in the years 2020-2021 following the assassination of Hachalu and now live at missionary shelters. Ask them. Their fantasy of becoming leaders of a new ethnic-exclusive republic has become just an illusion as The Wiz of Oz. ‘Ethiopia, out of Oromia! Ethiopia out of Oromia!’ That Barentu Taytu, that Gobena, that Dinegde, that Garasu, that Jagama and the rest of other fellow patriots would turn in their grave saying ‘Does this person realize how he is embarrassing and making a fool of himself for saying that?’. I guess sometimes what matters is not which ivy college you went to but it is how you talk when you come back. What a waste of resources!!!
Nuff said from me for now!!!

  2. Anyone or any ‘Party’ [like EPRP, Meison, Derg, TPLF-EPLF, OLF-IFLO, etc.] that triggered or orchestrated the massacre of an entire generation in the 1970s & 1980s SHOULD BE BANNED FROM ETHIOPIAN SOIL FOR GOOD.

They are MESSENGERS OF DEATH! They will never stop from triggering or orchestrating another massacre like that one again. The LEAST WE SHOULD DO is protect this generation from the fate of that massacred generation.

They offered Ethiopia nothing back then, they have nothing to offer Ethiopia now, and they will have nothing to offer Ethiopia in the future! These are Trojan Horses →The Enemy Within. They have No Conscience! They show No Remorse!
