Toronto – Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed has appointed General Asrat Deneo, who led the defense force operation in the Benishangul Gumuz region of Ethiopia to secure Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project, as Addis Ababa Police commissioner.
There was no explanation from the Prime Minister’s office why General Asrat is the right person for leading police work in the capital Addis Ababa.
In the army, he has served as Commander of Army’s land forces and as director of the defense force military intelligence.
He is replacing commissioner Getu Argaw whose next role is unspecified. It is unclear why he is removed from the position either.
In a related development, the office of the prime minister on Wednesday announced that Erziq Issa is appointed as Addis Ababa deputy police commissioner.
The removal of both the commissioner and deputy commissioner at the same time has triggered speculation whether there was an emerging situation ( perhaps related to security) that necessitated new leaders for Addis Ababa Police.
