Ethiopia's Ruling Party _ Red Sea Access

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Following a meeting from August 5-8, 2025, the Prosperity Party (PP) Council released a statement today asserting that it has made Ethiopia’s “natural and historical right” to sea access an international agenda.

The council declared that it has advanced “more than a phase” in its effort to restore Ethiopia’s “geostrategic position” in the Red Sea.

This declaration comes amid a resurgence of tensions with neighboring Eritrea.

PM Abiy Ahmed has repeatedly claimed that “a population of more than 120 million people cannot stay landlocked,” morally legitimatizing pursuit of access to the Red Sea is a “matter of survival” and a historical right on several occasions.

Neighbors in the region, especially Eritrea, are alarmed by this rhetoric. Isaias Afwerki, the president of Eritrea, has responded by calling such assertions provocative and revisionist. He warned against any attempts to change the region’s current borders.

Although the two leaders had initially forged a close alliance after the 2018 peace agreement, Asmara’s defensive stance and Addis Ababa’s more assertive tone have raised fears of new conflicts in a historically conflict ridden region.

The ruling Prosperity Party also made a reference about GERD. It claimed to have transformed Ethiopia’s geostrategic standing in the region by taking “appropriate and legal action” on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The dam remains a major source of regional tension. While Ethiopia views the GERD as a sovereign right and a vital project for national development, Egypt considers it an existential threat to its water security.

The party also asserted that “political and economic transformations have flourished in the face of challenges,” which has “narrowed our internal vulnerabilities” and “marginalized bandits.” It went on to state that it has “undermined the national and ethnic agendas of traitors who are expanding internal divisions and collaborating with Ethiopia’s historical enemies to attack the country.” The statement did not specify who these “historical enemies” are.

Regarding ongoing conflicts, the council announced that it will provide all necessary support to armed groups that choose to pursue peaceful alternatives and engage in non-violent struggle. Conversely, it stated that it would intensify law enforcement efforts against forces that refuse peaceful options and create problems for the public and national property.

This statement likely addresses the federal government’s two-year conflict with Fano forces in the Amhara region.

  1. There is nothing wrong for more than 130 million now ant to be more than 250 million in less than 25 years for expressing their desire to have their own outlet to sea. It will be so suffocating and impossible to survive not only as a country but as human beings. Nothing criminal about that. But don’t make neighbors feel jittery about that, young man. It is a legitimate request but rattle neighbors with that. The story with the very minority Black Italians is different. Their main and consistent desire is to see that gem of the colored go belly up so they can come in and loot at will just as they had done between 1991 and 1998. That is why they have a 911 emergency call line with Al-Qahirah. Lately, they have been itching to send one of their clunky Mig-29’s to blow up the GERD dam just to appease their lifelong Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee benefactors on the tip on the Nile.

    • Make that:

      1) There is nothing wrong for more than 130 million now and to be more than 250 million in less than 25 years..
      2) It is a legitimate request but don’t rattle neighbors with that.
