Ethiopian Airlines has distinguished itself as the leading Airline in Africa. Its operational competence and business foresight were proven even at a time when the airline industry was hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic.  It managed to remain profitable without laying off its employees by converting a significant number of its passenger planes into cargo.

However, this week stories of passenger abuse at Bole International Airport in the hands of security officials have been trending on social media platforms triggering extensive conversations about it. Individuals have been sharing video messages regarding their experiences of Abuse.

From the stories shared on social media, the abuse of passengers is not directly related to Ethiopian Airlines. It involves immigration officials who seem to consider themselves politically privileged on grounds of ethnic identity. There have been allegations that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration favors ethnic Oromo and is serving the Oromuma ideology although his government has been denying it.

Passengers with valid passports and visas are reportedly detained minutes before their flight. Those who came out to share their experience say – they had to give a bribe to the officials for the sake of not missing their flights.

The Ethiopian Airlines on Tuesday responded to the allegations. It said it will investigate the complaints and take corrective measures.

It said that “it has learned from social media pages about complaints in connection with service delivery at Bole Airport.” Noting that it pays attention to complaints from customers, it said it has been following the process.

Furthermore, it said that it is working with other stakeholders at Bole Airport to investigate the complaints and pledged to take measures based on the findings from the investigation.

The National Air Transport Facility Committee this week had an evaluative meeting to assess Ethiopian Airlines’ performance over the past six years. The committee said the outcome was positive. It said the number of passengers grew by 29 percent, revenue by 14 percent, and its profitability by 22 percent over the past six months.  About the complaints, the committee (whose head is the Federal Minister for Transport), the committee tends to think that “the rumors, hearsays and character assassinations are far from truth and unacceptable.”

Ethiopian Airlines has recently announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Boeing to acquire the latest Boeing 777- 9 to meet its plan to expand its international destinations.

The 79-year-old state-owned Ethiopian Airlines has been one of the major income earners for the country. The practice of political patronage and radical ethnic nationalism within the government structure seems to be compromising the support work needed for the airline in terms of security checks and customs control. The airline is unspecified if it will make public the findings from the investigation that seems to be underway.

  1. The problem with such “political” reporting is that it will at some point reveal its real intentions. In this case the statement that “Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration favors ethnic Oromo and is serving the Oromuma ideology although his government has been denying it.” See how to trivialize and de-legitimize a real concern at the same time creating multiplicity of problems. In other words, the present report is instigating one problem on top of the one being discussed. Certainly, Abiy’s Admin, like its predecessor, is racked by corruption. Unfortunately, Amharas or Tigrayans are no less or worse corrupt than Oromos.

  2. This media site does this intentionally. This is a pro-fano and pro-amhara nationalism media outlet. Rather than focusing on the corruption at hand they are focusing on Oromos. Why? Because they are racists. They demonize Oromos just like they demonized Tigrayans at the time of the war. Amhara nationalism is anti-ethiopia and anti-unity just like all the other ethnic nationalism in the country. Peace to Ethiopia and all it’s good kindhearted people and pain and misery to all the racists.

  3. I know a friend of mine who paid ETB 100,000+ with his visa, ticket, and all the required documents at hand, just to let him go without any delays. This is absolute corruption and lawlessness. This media outlet, though, seems to be biased by just blaming Oromos, but the Amhara’s were the ones who have been imprisoning, beating, and asking for a lot of money, which weighs more than bribes for Tigrians. I have never seen any groups of people as crumpled as the Amhara. This is a fact. They consider themselves to be religious, which is an absolute lie. They are a thousand miles away from being religious.

  4. Supporting Alem and Anbessa’s view

Yes, i feel the same way regarding some writers on this platform, it seems like it is very hard for them to stay away from generalization and pointing fingers on a specific tribe every time they get a chance. The current Ethiopian government includes people from all over the country regardless. Please focus on a specific issue, let alone to blame Oromo led government, it is hard to blame the whole Ethiopian airlines who is employing more than 17 000 employees, and you can’t generalize all. I am sorry to say this but most writers here are not mature enough, they assume no one will see their intentions… WRONG!

  5. Hi, To be honest Africa is only continent we’ve, Ethiopia airline is doing things gradually and is going on, On the 6th of this month from New York to Abidjan, The flight delayed we landed, We all knew hour and half, They told us the flight left so we should get a lunch ticket how,We stayed 8 hrs, at the airport with a one chicken and french flies No respect, my luggage broken,I’ve a video I’ll send it to social media, It happened this second time in Lome

  6. The airline is very dirty full of coackrotches. Its a big embarrassment for mother Afrika. The connection point at Addiss Ababa has the dirtiest Ablutions in the world. If one is travelling with kids, it’s a risk using these ablutions.

  7. Please the ethiopian airlines or ethiopian immigration need to work on investigation and finding those selfish gredy individuals who do such bad things yes there is issue there denieing the problem do not help the airlines or the immigration please go investigate and put the right leadership in the airport who the ppl or the travellers can go to now a day we are even scared of wearing our on gold b.c we k ow what is going on ….I have been traveling with ethiopian airlines since 2004 I have lost gold shoe cloth but no one take complain and they will right back accuse you for coming asking …….ethiopian airlines or the immigration have every body’s email please ask find the issue put low in the area

  8. 9. Sorry about the # sign typo mistake. Any way, the problem is not the EA perse but the customs offivials . They are either incompetent or corrupt by intent or have little work ethics. One stopped me in the line next to tte departure gate and took my passaport for no apparent reason only to be returned it seemly more experienced or senior agent Another asked her next coworker that may passport was brand new only be dismissed the next colleague saying there is no issue with it. My worst experience was when I paid a fee for entry visa twice each time about 200 dollar, because they didn’t process on time my E- visa application that was sent 14 days earlier and because of small technical mishap has occurred . It could have been worse, much worse. An Ethiopian-American lady travelling along with large family and with serious health problems collapsed and fell on the floor after long flight from US and four more hours frustration over her E-visa application that she sent online weeks before just like me. I thought they could do better and kindly than that especially when the whole world is toward free visa zones; regions and countries like the neighboring Kenya and others.

  11. This is a face of a genius and that airline is very lucky to have leaders like him. it was Tewolde bin Gebremariam before him and Girma bin Wake before that with the chain of geniuses going back for more than almost 80 years.

  12. I have nothing but praise as far as the ER staff and its flight service and security are concerned . There were two incident that happened to me personally while landed in Bole International Airport. Once I took mistakenly took wrong and another luggage that looked exact like mine in color, fabric and size, etc. forgetting to check the flight and name tag. When I arrived in the hotel and tried to change my clothes it wasn’t mine and I started worrying about all my valuable things in that bag. I slept the night uneasy and I brought the baggage next morning to the airport where they told me there was another passenger who was looking this same bag. After taking my personal info they took where hundred of other unclaimed bagges were kept and told to find yours among. There it was setting and I happily grabbed it. Another time, my baggage was late and it didn’t arrive for two days. They took my personal info , gave me their hotline phone number and then gave me call when it arrived the other day for pick up. I say nothing but kudos to those hardworking staff.

  14. Somebody asked somebody a proverbial question: ‘What kind of airline do you have in your neck of wood?’ ‘Horse buggy, and that is mostly used to haul away inmates’ bodies who died after decades in prisons’ was the honest and irrefutable answer. Case closed.
