The Ethiopian Parliament on Thursday approved a new Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister and Health Minister.

Temesgen Tiruneh, who has been serving as National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) is confirmed as Deputy Prime Minister, replacing Demeke Mekonnen who served in the position for the past 12 years.

Taye Atske Selassie, who has been serving as Foreign Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since the end of his role as Ethiopia’s permanent representative in the United Nations, is confirmed as Foreign Affairs Minister. Demeke Mekonnen was holding the position in addition to his Prime Ministerial role. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed indicated that Taye Aske Selassie is not a member of the ruling party. Taye Aske Selassie has extensive experience in diplomacy in addition to his academic background in international relations. Many Ethiopians, as expressed in social media, seem to have nodded to his appointment in view of his demonstrated ability at the United Nations as Ethiopia’s Ambassador.

Mekdes Daba ( a medical doctor by profession) who worked for the United Nations Agency is confirmed as Minister for Health replacing Liya Tadesse.
