Temesgen Tiruneh, Chief of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), is appointed as Deputy Prime Minister. He was confirmed in the parliament

In late January this year, the ruling party – following days of executive committee and central committee meetings – announced the departure of Demeke Mekonnen who served as Deputy Prime Minister for over eleven years.

Before his role as spy chief, Temesgen Tiruneh briefly served as president of the Amhara region after the assassination of Ambachew Mekonnen in 2019.  He is said to be one of the few loyalists of the Ethiopian Prime Minister who has been facing a legitimacy crisis for several years now and getting worse.

Under Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) domination of Federal government power, Temesgen Tiruneh and Abiy Ahmed were colleagues in the intelligence department. Before that he was in the military.

Temesgen is one of the top ruling party officials. It is unclear at this point as to who is taking over his role as spy chief. There have been rumors circulating on social media that the Oromia region’s president, Shimeles Abidissa could be the person taking over Temeesgen’s role. As it turns out, it Redwan Hussien, who have been serving as Ethiopian PM security adviser, is confirmed as Director of NISS.

Taye Atske Selassie named Ethiopia’s New Foreign Affairs Minister

In a related development, Taye Atske Selassie is confirmed as Foreign Affairs Minister of Ethiopia. It was Demeke Mekonen who has been holding the position for the past three years in addition to his Deputy Prime Ministerial role.

Among other roles, Taye has served as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United Nations for about a five years. He has built a professional reputation in that role.  His term at the United Nations was marked by a time when a diplomatic campaign against Ethiopia at the level of the Security Council was mounting due to the war between the Federal government and The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) which came to an end with the signing of the Pretoria agreement in November 2022.  Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is also something that triggered diplomatic pressure on Ethiopia.

Before he was appointed as  Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations, he served as Ethiopian Ambassador in Cairo where he served for about 18 months.

After the end of his term in the United Nations, he has been serving as Foreign Affairs Advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Minister of Health

Liya Tadesse is departing her role as Minister of Health. She was credited with a positive feedback in connection with the response to the Coronavirus disease. Mekdes Daba is named as the new Minister for Health and is confirmed in the Ethiopian parliament. Mekdes is not a member of the ruling Prosperity Party, according to state media reports.

  1. Congratulations to all these three patriots on your new appointments to one of the three most critical positions in the federal government during such challenging time. I also would like to take a moment to thank the outgoing minister of health our dear sister/daughter H.E. Dr. Lia bint Tadesse for her valuable service to her country during one of the most grim and dark days of the deadly pandemic. I wish you all success in your blessed endeavor to keep that gem of humanity up on its feet and marching forward in ever glory. Insha’Allah!!!

  2. Ato Temesgen Tiruneh is reportedly the student and admirer of the late prime minister Meles Zenawi and deserves the position. Surely, he has gained a lot from the late prime minister and the TPLF leadership he was associated with though the Amharas call him a traitor and `OPDO`s ` loyal servant. The Fano Amhara fighters which are defiant and intent on deposing the government of Abiy Ahmed will carry on their destabilizing campaigns until the regional power Tigray decides to intervene and crush the insurrection in the region.

  3. It is embarrassing how the appointments are reported by Borkena. There is little or no information on the new appointees and their replacement. The poverty of our country is compounded by irresponsible and inept journalists!
