Is Sheger City a strategy to swallow Addis Ababa?

Early this year, Oromia regional state authorities announced the formation of Sheger City by pulling together a string of towns that surround Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. (Read report about it HERE)

The pretext given to the new arrangement was administrative convenience. The new city administration is in Addis Ababa.

Oromia regional state renewed forceful demolition of houses in towns that are organized as Sheger city and thousands are reduced to homeless with their families.

Is Sheger City intended to engulf Addis Ababa with move to balance ethnic demographic composition?

  1. To think the one of the oldest lands on Earth is still fighting over a negligible difference in genetic/cultural makeup. What a circus. Yesterday it’s Tigrayan dominance, the day before is Amharic dominance, today is Oromo dominance, and the cycle never ends. I almost wish the country would split up, but then all those groups would just continue to fight among themselves, except now they’ll be even poorer. Truly an unimpressive state of humanity. I don’t see how Ethiopia will ever get its act together.

  2. You took the words out of my mouth. While we fight each other over superficial things and archaic ideas, the Chinese are preparing for lunar bases and beyond. We are so backward. Ethnic federalism will be the end of Ethiopia as we know it and unfortunately, a fractured Ethiopia will be the most disastrous event in the region and beyond. Addis Ababa belongs to Addis Ababa residents and all Ethiopians. No one ethnicity can claim the city.
