The Supreme Court in the Amhara region of Ethiopia released the former commander of the Amhara region special forces from prison. The court passed the decision this past Friday.
He was released on the same day in the afternoon.
Court ruled that Brig. General Tefera Mamo, who was first abducted in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, and then handed over to authorities in the Amhara region of Ethiopia on May 18, 2022, be released on 30,000 Ethiopian birr bail.
The government suspected the former general of “terrorist” activity.
The Prosecutor made a case against Gen. Tefera saying that the offence is a serious crime and the suspect could disappear if released on bail.
On the other hand, General Tefera’s lawyers argued that the offence his client is suspected of does not entail a restriction on bail rights.
The Federal government and Amhara regional state had mounted a crackdown in the region in the past few weeks on alleged grounds of security concern in the region. More than 4500 people had been arrested.
