Ethiopian Airlines has suspended its flights to thirty countries as the coronavirus threat is increasing with the rapid spread of the virus across the world. Ethiopian has multiples of destinations in some of the countries

The decision came after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s meeting with the COVID19 National Ministerial Committee on Friday in the afternoon. However, the statement from the office of the Prime Minister undisclosed the lists of countries to which Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights temporarily.

Ethiopian Airlines has already reported a loss of over 190 million dollars in revenue due to the Coronavirus threat. Unlike many other airlines, Ethiopian Airlines has not laid-off employees.  However, Prime Minister Abiy said that airlines could soon face challenging times.

The Prime Minister has also introduced numerous other measures to curb the spread of the disease that has become a threat to the world.

From now on, travelers entering Ethiopia are subject to have to go through fourteen days of self-quarantine. And they will have to cover their expenses during those two weeks; the government has made it clear.

Locally, the government has introduced additional policy measures. On Tuesday, the Federal prison administration announced that it would not allow visits to prison facilities for the next two weeks.

And today, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed disclosed that the government has decided to release prisoners who have children with them as part of the measure to contain the spread of coronavirus. It applies to those prisoners who served most of their prison terms and whose offenses are minor.  New inmates are to be tested for COVID 19 before they are confined to correctional facilities with other inmates.

Faith groups are encouraged to make changes to service format to avoid mass gathering.

Night clubs and bars are prohibited not to give services temporarily because of the national emergency.

There had been reported anti-foreigner sentiment in the country. The COVID19 National Ministerial Committee looked into the matter. “Harassment of foreign nationals is Ethiopian and not acceptable,” the office of the prime minister warned. The US embassy in Addis Ababa issued a “security alert” warning about “anti-foreigners sentiments.”

Businesses that are hiking prices on essential items taking advantage of the demand due to the situation remained a challenge to the society and the government. In that regard, the government said it would continue to take deterrent measures.

The government has closed well over one thousand businesses in the capital and regional states on the grounds of alleged price hikes on food items and other supplies necessary to fight the spread of the disease.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Education announced that it had postponed national leaving examinations for grade 8 and grade 12.

So far, there are no confirmed cases of COVID 19 outside of the capital Addis Ababa.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed on Thursday that the number of COVID 19 patients in the country has reached nine.

  1. The three Japanese Covid-19 patients in Ethiopia l said one of the three was a hired bodyguard chauffeur driver who traveled to Ethiopia to guard the billions worth of transactions the Japanese conduct when they take meat poultry from Ethiopia to Japan regularly . Ethiopian Airlines is getting banned allover the world so it is time for the Ethiopian government to identify the Amino Acid deficient sectors in the society , so they get cured by providing the meat poultry to those who need it for health reasons rather than giving it to the people who got high protein in their system already.

  3. This airline has already started reporting huge losses yesterday. What a pride of all us and Africa!!! But this is just the beginning of incurring losses to this and all other airlines. They make money on the size of traffic taking seats in their planes. We wish them the best and hope they will start flying every one of their crafts fully occupied soon.

  4. Africa needs help to preserve the different tribes and religions that are currently struggling to co exist with the genocidal civil wars . Many issues including the Abay River or the Nile river’s water coroversy issue are at the forefront of the need. We need to take into account these issues especially the Nile river water controversy got a big probability of starting the third and maybe the final World War .

  6. I want to say a word or two to you my dear countrymen/women who have lost your employment due to the undeclared recession caused by this very virulent pandemic. You know me by now that I have nothing but unconditional love for all of you. I am very proud of all of us who are very hardworking compatriots. We have shown ourselves and proved to everyone else that given the opportunity we make something out of nothing. We have brought back dying neighborhoods on every corner of this country where many of them were left to rot to vibrant business districts. We don’t sit back until luck strikes but we go out there and toil making honest living in the process. Very many of us have become valuable assets to high tech companies and multinational financial institutions. That is us. We can stack up to anyone else in every field when we see the opportunities. In every one of our successes we were not granted but earned it all through grinding hard work. But this pandemic is not showing any mercy even to hardworking people. I am sure you are feeling the pinch already. This virus does not seem to go away soon or confine itself to few places. It is everywhere taking lives in thousands already. This is the time for us to huddle around and face this scourge together. Look after one another. I am down on my knees begging all of you to stop looking at each other as Oromos, Amharas, Tigres, Somalis or whatever. This virus is here with one and only one scheme: To kill every breathing and living human being on this good earth. It will never favor and an Oromo over a Tigre or Amhara or anyone else. Help one another. Practice proper social distancing and in the meantime help those small businesses like restaurants by ordering takeouts. Check on the elderly who live alone from the proper distance. Let’s tell each other ‘I have your back’ I am my brother’s keeper.’ This could end up being 1918 déjà vu or worse. It could lead to a 2nd depression like the one in the 1930’s or even worse. As one economist opined before as ‘Recession is when your neighbor has lost his/her job. Depression is when you too have lost your job’. Keep that in mind. The trick is not to panic but face it head on with courage and looking for one another. This shall pass but not before giving humanity a scar that it will never forget. It shall pass. Insha’Allah!!!!
