Ethiopia’s Nobel Peace Prize winner Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, is changing his tone of speech after universities in Oromo and Amhara region of Ethiopia experienced another security crisis that claimed the lives of students.

In a meeting organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher education on Friday to discuss the situation in Universities, he emphasized on the roles of regional state heads, zone and city administrations in terms of restoring calm and order in the university communities.

“if universities are not moving in the direction of stability, government could take measures including closing them down,”  said Abiy Ahmed flanked by deputy prime minister Demeke Mekonen and The Minister for Science and Higher education, Hirut W/ Mariam

University Board Members, regional state presidents, zone administration heads, high level security officials and chief of staff of the Ethiopian Defense Force, among others, have attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed ways of identifying ways of the sources of the violence and ensuring sustainable peace.

Modernizing security apparatus and increasing the number of security personnel to ensure peace and security in the university is one of the measures that the prime minister is suggesting. Installation of devices to take fingerprints in the entrances of university campuses is another possible solution that he recommended.

His recommendation is informed by the view; it is also shared by many others, that those who instigate violence in the universities are external forces with their own political agenda.

However, he does not spare students either. He said, rightly, that students need to pose and think about the motives of entities who want them move along the path to death. Quality of education in Ethiopian universities has been criticized for many years now. Some observers tend to see lack of critical thinking and crowd mentality as key problems of university students.

Abiy Ahmed has warned that “Government will take legal measure on students who cause damage in university campuses.”

Apart from fostering security controls, building a social bond between students and the local community where the universities are located is another plan of action he suggested to resolve the problem.

Coordinated work between local communities and security forces could also help to take proactive measures, he said.

Violence has become a recurring problem in Ethiopian universities. At least five university students have been killed due to what appears to be ethnic based violence this past week alone.

    This is a long overdue move. It should happened long time ago in order to save lives of citizens. Even those universities where students security are consistently at risk must be closed permanently.

    With the current system being an Oromo is the only requirement for governmental jobs, with the job market currently being in the process of getting monopolized by Oromo extremists, no need to go to school for anyone , until a fair government takes over.

    Military , police and other governmental jobs are being monopolized by Oromo Abiy’s criminals. Same as huge lands grabs in Gambella , Oromia , Benishangul Gumuz , Gura Farada , Addis Ababa business investment opportnities are only being given to Oromos.

      I guess it is a good news. Are you sad ? We were traumatised by Amhara led regime in the past hundreds of decades.

      Churches preach for amhara adminisitred monarchy and and you always depict Oromos as if they are antiChrist, anti church and brutal active participants of killings and genocide;

      Woyane killed 60 million amharas , as for Amhara medias.

      So what is going to tell us tomorrow via your fake outlets ?
      We are very perplexed what to do with you guys, hate preachers .

      Stay calm. Are you trying to fuel even add fuel to the fire to the current violence initiated and exacerbated by amhara elites ? You cannot restore your outdated monarchy again in our soil ?

      It will not happen in my days !

      We were isolated and attacked where ever you are controlling job opportunities as a recuiter .

      Non amharas are always abandoned in public and church services as well.

      You could still ask asylum there by defaming Oromos as if they are persecuting on the account of your religion and race .

      Since you will not be accepted without this case. You prefer demonize your fellow and befriend even worship foreigners .

    @Gelete,

    There is saying that says when one was asked to tell about others genuinely did tell his own story. To begin with when you and your types will ever go down from the wagon of spreading fake accounts of history and even if your account were true when you are thinking to move beyond? How you can ascribe the comfort of few Amharas to majority of Amhara pedants? What has to do religion which is personal with this discussion at all? And even if we dig objectively past rulers ethnicity they probably belong evenly between Amhara, Oromo and Tigray. They just happen to use Amharic as their official working language. How many of Amhara pesantts did and do know to write and read to actually benefit from the rules because they did speak Amharic? Was not large number of Amharic peasants were migrating to work as laborers in plantations of the South and East including Abba Juffars? All because the rules did not give them any options where their anscestora lived? Also how do you explain the voracity of Oromo expansion and moggassa thtan in just 300 years did expand from Borena to the current claimed boundaries and in the way angulated several cultures and languages? How do you dare not to see history with objective lenses? How you are not ashamed when you you claim that now time is for non Amharic speakers when Oromo extremists today are explicitly targeting minorities like Gedeos and Southern population s like Gamos. I would rather state what is going on today with Oromo extremist is that one of just hodams or strait out Basis/fascists. Engrdashet statement may be oversized I do not have information what is going on on the ground on wealth distribution in the country but just looking at the Gedeo issue and the recurrent macabre slaughtering of innocents in Shahemrne, Burrayyo, Sebeta, Arsi, Bale, Nathret, Dire Dawa, and the criminal inaction of the government lead by ODP makes what Engedashet mentioned just a miniscule issue. By the way even today when the self appointed Oromo nationalists are at helm or during the TPLF era who did displace pesants around big cities their land given in the today so called Oromia? Not Amharas for sure but the same self proclaimed Oromo freedom fighters coming from other part. People should look around and check landownership history of those big houses in outskirts of the cities and they will find it out? Moving to the course is a regular human migration process but post TPLF era is systematic policy used by the elite to grab land and change demographics that is a factual truth.
    We will never have peace and current incumbets euphoria will be short lived socially when the same majority Oromo people stands with other Ethiopians. For time being hodams can celebrate their throphy while it lasts.
