The African Union is unveiling a commemorative statue of Emperor Haileselassie I in the premises of African Union, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed earlier today.

Mr. Nebiat said “The Commemorative Statue of Emperor Haile Selassie which is set to be unveiled at the AU Headquarters on 10th February reflects the history of African liberation, integration, and Emperor Haile Selassie’s unquestionable role in the evolution of Africa’s development agenda,” as quoted in the social media pages of the ministry.

Explaining the importance of the commemorative statue, AU Deputy Chairperson, Amb. Kwesi Quartey, noted “the commemorative statue of Emperor Haile Selassie is an important recognition of the Emperor’s contribution to Africa’s liberation and unity leading up to the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963,” as reported by the African Union.

Emperor Haileselasie had played a pivotal leadership role in the establishment of what was then the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in May 1963, now renamed as The African Union.

The Statue is carved by Ale Felege Selam Art school sculptures in Addis Ababa University. And it will be unveiled on the occasion of the opening ceremony 32nd African union summit on February 10 in the presence of African leaders and members of the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed among will attend the ceremony.

Emperor Haileselsassie’s lasting contribution to the freedom and unity of Africa was overshadowed, if not totally buried, due to the political developments in the country in the past 45 years.

He is believed to have been killed in prison following the 1974 socialist revolution in Ethiopia and his remains were unearthed in the years after Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) took over power in Addis Ababa. A video of what is believed to be his last appearance before he was taken prisoner is available HERE.

Yet, the late Meles Zenawi was reportedly opposed to the idea of statue for emperor Haileselassie at the African Union – an idea which was raised by some other African leaders. A number of African countries have named streets and avenues in the capital after emperor Haileselassie.

The current administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is believed to have played a positive role for the erection of Emperor Haileselassie’s statue at the AU head quarter and even paid for it.

Very good to honour Heroes, however I still need to know the actual concrete contribution of the Emperor to Pan Africanism, freedom of African countries. For example, did the king,
-send troops to assist African countries combating colonial masters
-how many African countries did he visit to encourage the African spirit like Nkrumah
    – How much money did he support Freedom fighters with.
From my experience leaving in Ethiopia, many Abesha , almost all believe they are not Africans, they call other Africans ‘ Africans’ which is very shocking to many. If he was, the Emperor was so African how comes many of his People are so far from Africa and feels no sense of belonging to Africa.
In Ethiopia, there is no African businesses but for Dangote, no African restaurants nor shops,
Someone should assist me in understanding the Pan Africanist Emperor Haile selassie.

That is because you missed interpreted Africa as country. Africa is Not a country. It’s a continent. So, we are Ethiopian, but not African. Africa has about 57 countries & Ethiopia is one of them. Ethiopia has its own history, culture, tradition, languages…etc as well as others African countries. For example, Americans are from America not from North America. English is from great Britain, not from Europe…etc

Commentary, 2 Feb 2019 After I read the News Item, I was tempted to write something about my ’feeling’ with respect to Emperor Haile Selassie, Elect of God, the King of Kings, of the Tribe of Judah but I hesitated to do so. Now that a Reader [Paul n] opens the gate, I squeamishly enter the ‘bee-hive’ without protection. It is a phenomenon of FEAR crafted upon an entire nation for decades by a single Dictator.
Emperor Haile Selassie was an ABSOLUTE DICTATOR who only cares about himself, alpha to omega. The people of Ethiopia were his subjects who are expected to solemnly swear by the Emperor, prior to God. He was also a racist – though diplomatically. Once upon a time, a long time ago, when he visited the United States of America he was asked whether Ethiopians consider themselves as Negros (1). Here is how he apparently answered the question: “IF the word Negro is meant to be for all Black people, we are Negros; if, on the other hand, it is designated for the Black people of America, we are not Negros.” There was no further question from the Reporter.
His Majesty Haile Selassie was a shrewd, canning, ruthless, diplomatic, pretentious, racist, egotist, selfish and, above all, loath to give credit to anyone for any work done. Everything that goes right belongs to him; things that go wrong was somebody’s fault, with consequential demeaning action on that person.
Fifty years of absolute ruling made Ethiopia — with its ‘modern highly educated’ strata in all fields of endeavour — one of the most docile State in the entire world, completely spellbound by a single human creature. At the END, Haile Selassie himself became ordinary citizen and wound up being a prisoner of a ruthless Military Coup d’état and wound up, pathetically, in a shabby prison room and died like a loose old dog. It is the greatest TRAGEDY – something that could have been avoided with a simple humble democratic system of governance. But Dictators are born to >>create >>demolish >>and disappear ingloriously – leaving behind damaged people and country.
If the African Union of 2019 — in its wisdom and consciousness — wish to recognize the legend of such a cruel person, like Haile Selassie, it is hoped that the Authorities of the Day at the African Union will also remember {with appropriate corresponding statue] the countless Ethiopians who were victims of self-appointed leader. HISTORY SHALL REMEMBER THEIR ACTION. By the way, these words are the sentiment expressed by Haile Selassie himself at a Geneva meeting where the European Powers were in favour of Mussolini of Italy against a Black leader called Haile Selassie of Ethiopia!!! What a boomerang!!!
Today, we see High African Officials erecting a statue for Haile Selassie, the well known ABSOLUTE CRUEL DICTATOR, against his own people for simply desiring to have a democratic system in the country. That Statue at the African Union will always be a beacon (a reminder) pricking their consciousness. How would it feel to tell a fictitious story to their own children today, and feel guilt consciousness tomorrow, in the face of their own grown-up children? HISTORY can never be hidden for ever.

very Good well done, actually it is late but better to not totally forget our own hero. I think we are tryto start to recognize our own heroes and make a new ones rather than recognizing others heroes.

Excellent. It is good that the Emperor should indeed be honored. For those who remember the Emperor with scorn and distinct, perhaps should could consider the word of the Lord Messiah… ‘A good man is not without honor, except in his own house among his own people…’ From experience of living in Ethiopia, many do not want democracy, nor theocracy, many complain about corruption while they themselves corrupt common sense and order for their own benefit. The emperor’s contribution to our struggle is immense and profound. It’s only those who have never really suffered the humiliation of dominion by an hostile invader, having never been exiled from their homeland on account of an inhuman lust for wealth, that can’t appreciate his contribution. Had the two generations of ethiopians: those who fought at Adam, and those who fought the tyranny of fascism not been firm in their faith in the Almighty, they would not have been successful in their campaigns against the undertakings of the Wicked democrats and their kings and priests that energized and sent them. Had the two generations not been steadfast in their faith, the African population would have been drastically deminished and would be a true minority in the world. In this regard the faith which was weining among the African diaspora due to the hypocrisy of those claiming to be Christian but proved themselves to be otherwise, was strengthened and thus stride by stride, with the faith, courage and moral example set by the Ethiopia’s emperors, we reclaim all the rights that we had lost. We do so In the faith that the day will come, as the Emperor has said, that all the effects of colonialism and neo colonialism shall be driven completely from the earth.
Today we see the resurgence of fascism in the USA and USE which will once again attempt to rob mankind of its freedom. Many are and will be seduced into selling their souls to obtain this neo colonial slavery: leaders and people alike. Those who understand the true significance and purpose of the royal House of David as the instrument of God’s Judgement shall remain steadfast in their faith and shall ultimately win the struggle of good over evil.

Haile Selassie 1st, the Instrument in power of the Trinity….I thank you and salute you, knowing that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, even the spirits of just men made perfect. Forward ever, backward never. The lion of Judah has prevailed
