Toronto – 15 Eritrean nationals are reportedly rescued from a refrigerator of a truck traveling from France to the United Kingdom. The incident occurred this past Saturday.
BBC Amharic report said, citing AFP, that they were hiding there for several hours. One of them is said to be chile while four are under 18 years of age. Also there was a woman among them.
According to the report, they were screaming and calling for help as the truck driver stopped for a break in the cross country trip between France and England.
However, the source unspecified the location where the truck driver stopped. What is indicated is that the issue was reported to local authorities.
French Physicians reportedly provided medical assistance. Four of them were hospitalized as they were severely impacted by the cold.
Those under 18 years of age are handed over to charitable organizations, the report added.
The report cited Christian Vedelago, a local authority, as saying “The state of coldness they were in indicates that they were in the vehicle for several hours.”
The truck driver is not under investigation in connection with the incident.
From the report, the Eritrean nationals were ordered to leave the country on alleged grounds of illegal presence in France.
The BBC report indicated that the preferred mode of transportation from most immigrants crossing from France to the UK is a small boat. As many as 25,436 migrants have crossed to the UK using boats over the past seven months.
