Fano Forces Claim Wuchale Control and Route Closure in Northern Ethiopia

Fano fighters reportedly seize Wuchale along the Tigray highway as ENDF airstrikes intensify and TPLF claims gains near the Eritrean border

TORONTO, Canada  — The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) and Fano forces continued fighting for a sixth consecutive day across several areas in north-central Ethiopia.

Intense fighting occurred in Wuchale, a town roughly 460 kilometers north of Addis Ababa along the highway to the Tigray region. Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) reported this week that Fano forces took control of the town.

EMS did not specify casualty figures for either side. A photograph circulating on social media shows Fano fighters outside the Abbay Bank branch in Wuchale, purportedly confirming their control of the area. It remains unconfirmed whether Fano forces maintain control of the town.

If confirmed, the capture of Wuchale threatens the ENDF logistical route along the Dessie-Woldia-Mekelle Road. The town lies less than 25 kilometers from the Jary 2 IDPs camp, where a government drone strike killed over 15 people and wounded 27 others earlier this week.

Fano forces belong to the Alliance for Survival, a coalition of seven armed groups operating across the country—including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)—which concluded its sixth regular meeting last week at an undisclosed location.

The ENDF has not commented on Fano’s claims regarding Wuchale.

However, confirmed reports indicate that military operations in the area have intensified, primarily through combat air sorties and drone strikes.

Meanwhile, TPLF forces in Tigray claim that government forces suffered significant losses along the Eritrean border. ENDF troops had dislodged TPLF units to that border zone within weeks of launching operations in Tigray in late September. The ENDF has neither confirmed nor denied the TPLF claims.
