(Nairobi, Kenya) — World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has declared that recurring military strikes on non-combatant populations in Ethiopia’s Amhara and Tigray regions have reached an extremely alarming level, warning that persistent hostilities are driving the nation’s fragile health system to the brink of total collapse.

In an official statement addressing the regional humanitarian crisis, Dr. Tedros highlighted recent fatal incidents, specifically pointing to a deadly air strike on the Jari 2 internally displaced persons camp in South Wollo, Amhara Region, and an attack targeting civilians seeking emergency food relief in Rama, Tigray Region. The WHO chief emphasized that these assaults resulted in widespread civilian fatalities, including the death of a newborn infant, while compounding trauma among vulnerable displaced communities.

Dr. Tedros noted that repeated drone bombardments and active armed engagements across northern Ethiopia have severely disrupted essential health infrastructure. Active combat zones are currently suffering from acute shortages of critical pharmaceuticals, emergency medical equipment, and qualified health personnel, while ambulance operations and aid transport corridors remain heavily restricted or entirely obstructed by ongoing insecurity.

While WHO teams and United Nations partner agencies continue round-the-clock emergency operations to deliver medical supplies to impacted areas, health officials underscored that civilian populations, medical workers, and humanitarian relief convoys must be granted unconditional protection and unhindered access. Calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities, Dr. Tedros emphasized that true courage lies in choosing peace, concluding that “the best medicine for this problem is peace.”
