Security forces detain 73 suspects in Shirka Woreda as independent verification remains pending amid ongoing regional violence

By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Oromia Regional Government announced that security forces have detained 73 individuals in connection with a violent attack in Shirka Woreda, Arsi Zone, while independent verification remains pending regarding the identities of those in custody and their direct link to the assault.
In an official statement addressing regional security operations and economic development plans, Head of the Oromia Region Communication Service Hailu Adugna stated that law enforcement measures against armed groups continue to yield operational results. Regional authorities confirmed that during the October 24 attack in Shirka Woreda, armed groups killed civilians, destroyed public and private property, and left multiple residents injured. Following targeted security operations in the area, authorities placed 73 individuals identified by the government as members of the Fano group under legal detention.
Alongside law enforcement operations, regional authorities indicated that efforts are underway to repatriate displaced residents to their homes while providing emergency food, medical supplies, and material assistance. The administration also outlined five-year economic performance metrics, urging regional residents to disregard unverified information while fostering inter-communal coexistence.
Despite the government’s announcement of the arrests, independent verification has not yet established whether the detained individuals were directly involved in the Shirka Woreda assault. Local community leaders and civil society groups emphasize that persistent, targeted killings of Christian residents in the Arsi Zone continue to occur without clear institutional accountability or formal admission of responsibility by the perpetrators.
