(Nairobi, Kenya) — Heavy gunfire erupted across multiple neighborhoods in Moyale, a border town on the Ethiopia–Kenya frontier, leaving terrified residents trapped inside their homes as long-standing territorial disputes between the Oromia and Somali regional states escalated.

According to local sources, the security breakdown was triggered by a dispute over the hoisting of the Somali Regional State flag in Kebele 02—a contested administrative area where Oromia and Somali regional territories border each other primarily along municipal roadways. The raising of the flag sparked immediate resistance, escalating into clashes on October 18, 2026, during which a 13-year-old girl was killed. The incident led to widespread disruptions in public transportation, commercial activities, and hospitality services throughout the town.

Following days of intense community strain, elders and local security representatives negotiated an agreement to lower the controversial flag. However, local sources reported that the decision provoked counter-protests among Somali residents in Kebele 02, renewing tensions across the town. Heavy gunfire resounded through various sectors starting Wednesday evening, forcing families to remain indoors as fighting threatened to spread to surrounding border areas between the two regions.

Moyale remains one of the most volatile and heavily contested territorial flashpoints in southern Ethiopia, where overlapping administrative claims between the Borana Zone of Oromia and the Somali Region periodically trigger severe security crises. Federal security forces intervened to de-escalate active exchanges, but attempts by local media outlets to reach security officials from both regional administrations for official commentary yielded no response.
