(Nairobi, Kenya) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has for the first time publicly confirmed that Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces acquired combat drones, addressing military developments days after United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio referenced a drone strike and explosion targeting Addis Ababa.

According to Addis Maleda, in a 27-minute televised address broadcast in Tigrinya on national television, Prime Minister Abiy stated that TPLF leadership prioritized arms procurement and drone acquisitions over regional infrastructure and civilian development in Tigray over the past eight years. The Prime Minister accused TPLF leadership of diverting humanitarian food relief intended for internally displaced populations, as well as smuggling regional mineral resources, to fund heavy weaponry and military assets.

According to Addis Maleda, the Prime Minister’s confirmation follows a recent Ethiopian Air Force exhibition in which military attachés from foreign embassies were shown captured foreign-manufactured drones and anti-tank weaponry allegedly seized from TPLF forces. The public admission also addresses reports by international media regarding an explosion and drone attack targeting capital infrastructure and military facilities, which had previously received no formal confirmation from federal authorities.

Addressing regional dynamics, Prime Minister Abiy urged young combatants and Tigrayan residents to lay down arms, participate in peaceful development, and integrate into national academic and agricultural sectors, warning that individuals responsible for criminal acts will face legal accountability under Ethiopian law. Turning to relations with Asmara, Abiy issued a sharp warning to Eritrean authorities, cautioning that setting aside peaceful options would result in severe consequences and criticizing current Eritrean security alignments.
