Gambella Police Commission announced a curfew as the situation in the city worsens

Borkena Desk
TORONTO, Canada — Armed groups carried out another attack on Wednesday night in Gambella city. The regional government has confirmed the security incident in the city.
Loss of civilian lives is also confirmed. However, Gambella Police has not disclosed the number of civilians and security officials killed in the attack.
Borkena has received a message from residents in the city. They allege that residents of the city from other parts of the country were targeted in the attack. While sources indicated that the security situation has turned into something that cannot be controlled by the regional police, the armed group that has caused the security crisis in the city is unspecified.
Gambella police on Wednesday confirmed the involvement of federal forces to contain the security situation. It has imposed a curfew between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. indefinitely until the security situation in the country improves. Movement of people, vehicles, and motorbikes is restricted.
Government buildings were among the targets. Video footage circulating on social media purportedly shows one of the regional government offices in smoke, suggesting explosions.
Ethnic groups from the locals have been operating in the region for several years now. As well, there have been allegations that ethnic Oromo Nationalists—including those in government structures in the Oromia region—have organized a “Shane”-like group in the city. However, Borkena was unable to independently verify the story.
Apart from armed groups, the region is home to hundreds of thousands of refugees from South Sudan. There were instances in the past when there were armed groups from the refugee communities as well.
The Ethiopian federal government has not yet remarked on the situation in the Gambella region. There have been several security incidents in the region. The latest one came at a time when the Ethiopian Defense Forces are overstretched due to renewed conflict in the Tigray region and as Fano forces intensify offensives against government forces in different parts of the region.
