Getachew Reda Urges EU Sanctions Against Eritrean-Backed Forces Amid Heightened Regional Tensions

By Staff Writer

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Minister and Advisor to the Prime Minister on East African Affairs, Getachew Reda, has urged the European Union to impose targeted sanctions on the Eritrean government and its allied security forces, warning that inaction could trigger catastrophic destabilization across the Horn of Africa.

Getachew disclosed that he held high-level diplomatic discussions with the European Union Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region alongside the EU Ambassador to Ethiopia. During the deliberations, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for international diplomatic intervention regarding current operational and political developments across Tigray, Eritrea, and Sudan.

According to Getachew, he conveyed critical assessments regarding what he described as the destabilizing role played by the administration in Asmara and its regional proxy networks. He warned EU diplomats that failing to implement timely punitive measures against these entities could exacerbate active conflict corridors. Both sides agreed to enhance intelligence-sharing frameworks and maintain close coordination to prevent further military escalation in the region.

In response, Eritrean Minister of Information Yemane Gebremeskel rejected the allegations, accusing Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party of deflecting from internal security challenges. Yemane asserted that the Ethiopian government has expended substantial state resources on heavy military hardware—including the acquisition of over 360 armored combat vehicles from the United Arab Emirates in recent years—despite receiving more than 30 billion dollars in foreign assistance over the past eight years. Dismissing the claims, the Eritrean official maintained that the assertions from Addis Ababa represent groundless accusations aimed at externalizing internal political friction.
