Salsay Weyane Tigray Accuses TPLF Factions and Federal Government of Escalating Regional Conflict

By Staff Writer
(NAIROBI) — The opposition party Salsay Weyane Tigray (SAWET)—also known as Third Woyane Tigray—issued a formal statement warning that internal political rivalries within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and interventions by the federal government are plunging the Tigray region into a dangerous political crisis and a destructive cycle of conflict.
In its statement, SAWET asserted that rival internal factions within the TPLF are pursuing military escalation to consolidate power at the expense of regional stability. The party highlighted a growing divide between TPLF elements that recently vacated Mekelle and the newly aligned Tigray Peace Force (TPF) operating alongside federal units. According to the opposition group, while one faction claims military victory, the other continues to mobilize resources, effectively preparing the region for prolonged warfare.
SAWET also criticized the federal administration, alleging that federal military oversight undermines local governance structures, regional autonomy, and constitutional self-determination rights guaranteed under the federal system. The party stated that Tigray is transitioning into federal military administration without achieving genuine emancipation or constitutional self-governance.
Calling for an immediate return to peaceful dialogue, SAWET emphasized that urgent political attention must prioritize the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs), the preservation of Tigray’s territorial integrity, the restructuring of civil governance, and mitigating the threat of widespread famine. The party urged all regional political forces, civil society organizations, and the public to engage in transparent discussions to prevent further civilian hardship.
