TORONTO, Canada — Nearly a week after the latest military escalation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, reports from pro-Tigray Peace Force media outlets indicate that the Ethiopian Defense Force and the Tigray Peace Force on Wednesday took control of the Wukro.

Awramba Times, a pro-TPF force media with links in Tigray, reported that there was intense fighting on Wednesday in the afternoon in the Shire and Wukro area , and that these areas came under the control of the Ethiopian Defense Force and Tigray Peace Forces. The story is not independently verified and the Ethiopian Defense Force has not confirmed anything yet, including its control of Mekelle.

Zara media,  a U.S. based media outlet with expressed support for the TPLF forces, confirmed that there have been fighting in different parts of the region between Ethiopian Defense Force and The Tigray Defense Force, as it calls them. However, it did not confirm if Wukro fell into the hands of the Defense Force/Tigray Peace Force. No information is available regarding casualties on both sides.

It has also been reported that there were drone strikes in many areas in the region. While it is reported that there are civilian casualties, the numbers are unspecified.

Aksum and Adwa towns are reportedly under Tigray forces despite reports of recurring drone strikes targeting hotels in the cities. In Adwa, Soloda hotel was targeted with a drone strike. Five civilians including people who were reportedly in the hotel at the time were killed. Based on sources from the region, the Defense Force targeted the hotel with the assumption that the TPLF leaders were staying there.

According to Awrama Times, five TPLF leaders including Getachew Assefa, Fetlework Gebreegziabheir and Debretsion Gebremichael, have already crossed to Eritrea. Zara Media disputes that the information is false. The TPLF leaders are still in Tigray.

Meanwhile, Former Defense Chief of Staff and key TPLF figure, Samora Yenus on Tuesday said that the fighting is over. “In my view, the leaders need to know that the fighting is over. Whatever they are doing after this does not change except increasing losses,” he said.  He advised that the fighters need  to go to their families, and the leaders surrender to the government. His remark triggered criticism from ethnic Tigray activists who support the TPLF armed struggle.
