(Nairobi, Kenya) — Residents of Adigrat town in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray Region have reported the movement of Eritrean military forces into the city, with mechanized units observed moving south toward the regional capital, Mekelle.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that foreign soldiers, transported on heavy military vehicles, entered Adigrat—located approximately 40 kilometers south of the Ethiopian border. Information sources in Mekelle corroborated these accounts, citing reports from Adigrat residents who observed mechanized convoys proceeding along the southern highway corridor toward Mekelle.

Local reports indicate that troops were observed operating along the corridor stretching from Zalambessa to Fatsi, the administrative center of Gulomakeda Woreda. Residents noted that military units have established encampments at the government college in Fatsi and constructed defensive fortifications on the strategic height of Fiya Qeshi, an elevated vantage point along the Fatsi-Adigrat road previously utilized during prior military engagements. Patrol and surveillance operations are reportedly being conducted between Zalambessa and the fortified positions.

These developments follow statements from federal officials acknowledging external military participation in the region. Minister of Innovation and Technology Dr. Abraham Belay previously confirmed the involvement of Eritrean forces in the renewed hostilities. Concurrently, the Afar Regional State government confirmed that several foreign soldiers involved in active combat engagements had been taken into custody.

On the ground in central Tigray, reports indicate that the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) alongside allied Tigray Peace Forces have established control over Agulae, a town situated north of Mekelle, following heavy morning engagements. Tigrayan forces subsequently withdrew from the area toward Wuqro. Following the securing of Mekelle, federal units have also advanced to Hagere Selam, located southwest of the regional capital along the Tembien transit axis.
