European Union Warns Escalating Conflict in Northern Ethiopia and Rising Tensions With Eritrea Could Spark Wider Regional War

European Union Urges Immediate De-escalation, Recommitment to Cessation of Hostilities, and Protection of Civilians Amid Growing Regional Friction

By Staff Writer

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The European Union issued an official statement expressing deep concern over intensifying military conflict within Ethiopia and growing bilateral tensions along the border with neighboring Eritrea.

The bloc warned that the current trajectory poses severe dangers to stability across the Horn of Africa and risks triggering a broader regional war.

The European Union urged all combatant factions to immediately cease hostilities and halt rhetoric or actions that could further exacerbate the security environment.

The bloc called on the signatories of the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement to reaffirm their commitment under the African Union framework and ensure the comprehensive implementation of the permanent peace accord. Furthermore, the EU emphasized that all parties maintain a strict legal duty under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and facilitate unimpeded delivery of emergency humanitarian assistance across affected populations.

Addressing regional stability, the European Union reiterated the fundamental importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states in the region.

The Union called on external actors to refrain from destabilizing interference and instead leverage their diplomatic influence to support peaceful, political resolutions. Concluding its statement, the European Union declared its readiness to support all constructive efforts aimed at restoring peace, long-term stability, and economic integration across the Horn of Africa.
