(Nairobi, Kenya) — In official statements released yesterday, October 5, 2026, the Freedom and Equality Party and the Amhara National Movement (NAMA) congratulated the new government formed by the Prosperity Party, which won the majority of seats in the 7th general election, and re-elected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, while calling on the new administration to fulfill its public responsibility by ensuring national peace, easing the high cost of living, and delivering fair services.

The statements issued by the two opposition political parties indicate that the general election held last May was a historic chapter in which the people, even amid severe security threats, confirmed that power is consolidated only through elections and the ballot. Noting that the new government was established on this public commitment, the parties expressed their hope that it will transition the country to a better phase of development and peace.

The Freedom and Equality Party, in its statement, laid out in detail three urgent tasks that the new government should work on with special focus in the short and long term.

The party indicated that the first and foremost task is reliably ensuring national peace and the security of citizens. It urged the government to extend a hand of peace to forces that have taken up arms, resolve political differences through peaceful means, and travel additional distance for agreement.

Secondly, it was noted that alleviating the severe inflation and high cost of living that has prevailed in the country is a major responsibility of the government. The party, which noted that government employees, teachers, and health professionals are particularly affected by the high cost of living, stressed that the administration should ease daily pressure on citizens by designing production and supply policies, using technologies, and increasing the supply of basic goods.

Thirdly, it was stated that creating a public-serving government free from corruption and maladministration is necessary. The party urged that to achieve this, a strong civil service reform must be carried out and government services must be made technology-supported.

On the other hand, the Amhara National Movement (NAMA), in its statement, conveyed a message of best wishes to the appointed government leaders and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. NAMA stated that it believes the new government, understanding the country’s current situation and national and regional competitive conditions, will respond to the people’s demands for development and justice.

NAMA also affirmed that it is ready to provide fully positive cooperation in all national measures taken to ensure lasting peace by upholding the rule of law, to build a democratic system by expanding the political space, and to implement economic policies that ease the people’s high cost of living. It announced that it will continue its firm partnership on issues of national interest, unity, and survival.
