TPLF Authorities Accuse Continental Body of Inaction on Pretoria Agreement Implementation and Unaddressed Military Escalation

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau released an official statement expressing deep concern over a recent press release issued by the African Union, accusing the continental organization of failing to oversee the impartial implementation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
Regional authorities stated that repeated appeals urging the African Union to reconvene its High-Level Panel to assess implementation progress and establish a formal path forward have gone unanswered, leaving the agreement vulnerable to unilateral federal decisions.
Tigray leadership highlighted that core components of the peace accord remain unfulfilled, specifically pointing to the federal government’s failure to maintain mutual recognition between signatories and restore the legal and political status of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
The bureau emphasized that key areas across Western and Northwestern Tigray remain outside the administration of the Tigray Regional Government, leaving thousands of internally displaced persons facing prolonged hardship away from their homes. Furthermore, regional authorities cited ongoing economic restrictions, the withholding of federal budget transfers, and disruptions to essential public services as major factors compounding regional distress.
The official release detailed escalating military engagements along Tigray’s borders, accusing federal forces of executing large-scale troop mobilizations alongside an offensive at Shererina in Western Tigray. Regional communications officials reported that federal forces launched joint offensives targeting Tigray Security Forces positions in southern Tigray and from the direction of the Afar Region on September 23, 2026, supported by extensive drone strikes and artillery bombardment, forcing regional troops to enter a defensive posture.
Tigray authorities criticized the African Union for remaining silent during recent aerial drone strikes, including an attack on a Catholic Relief humanitarian convoy that drew sharp condemnation from the United States Department of State. While reiterating that peace and dialogue remain strategic priorities, the Tigray Regional Government declared that mediation must remain independent, impartial, and consistently engaged with both parties, asserting that the African Union has failed to address critical realities on the ground.
