Coordinated armed incursions along administrative boundaries connecting the Konso, Alle, and South Omo zones in the South Ethiopia Region leave multiple dead, dozens injured, and over 500 residents displaced

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Clashes along district boundaries connecting the Konso, Alle, and South Omo zones in the South Ethiopia Region have left multiple people dead, dozens injured, and over 500 residents displaced following coordinated armed incursions, house burnings, and cattle looting.
Local community elders and eyewitnesses report that the violence erupted on September 10, 2026, after armed men entered Kolme District in Konso Zone claiming to track stolen cattle. Although local elders initially urged the group to disperse peacefully while authorities investigated, heavily armed assailants returned the following morning, launching surprise attacks on Masoya Kebele and surrounding villages.
Residents fleeing Masoya Village reported that gunfire broke out at dawn, forcing families to evacuate children before returning to find homes, grain stores, flour mills, a local place of worship, and the Mago Health Post destroyed by fire. Fleeing farmers stated that attackers looted livestock—including cattle, goats, and poultry—while taking control of critical watering points along the Weyto River.
Local residents reported that armed groups from neighboring Alle Zone joined the initial raiding parties, escalating the assault across multiple agricultural settlements. Residents confirmed that at least six civilians died on the Konso side, while more than 500 people fled their homes in Kurgo, Durail, Kisima, and Tuka to seek safety in neighboring areas.
Mr. Fikru Birhanu, Chief Administrator of Kolme District in Konso Zone, confirmed that armed men entering under the pretext of retrieving missing cattle instigated the assault. He reported that four people died, six sustained serious injuries, and 21 structures—including health and educational facilities—were burned to the ground. Mr. Fikru added that security forces are monitoring continued armed movements near the Kolango area in Alle Zone while attempting to stabilize the district.
Providing a perspective from the neighboring jurisdiction, Mr. Aike Zombe, Head of the Bena Tsemay District Peace and Security Office, confirmed that a boundary dispute over missing livestock led to armed clashes, leaving two people dead and three injured on the Bena Tsemay side.
Concurrently, Bena Tsemay District Administrator Mr. Yohannes Gashu stated that local community members did not initiate the violence, attributing the escalation to third-party provocateurs and displaced individuals from the Alle community who coordinated the raids. Ethiopian National Defense Force units deployed to the region to restore order, maintaining patrols as sporadic gunfire continued through the afternoon of September 14, 2026.
