Russia and Ethiopia hold direct talks to scale up blended fertilizer trade, bolster food security, and deepen strategic bilateral ties

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut has confirmed that Moscow is holding direct talks with Ethiopian officials to expand shipments of blended fertilizers, seeking to bolster the Horn of Africa nation’s agricultural sector and food security.
Speaking in an interview with the Vesti news service, Minister Lut stated that Russia has already exported approximately 500,000 metric tons of complex fertilizers to Ethiopia. Both governments are actively negotiating strategies to increase future delivery volumes.
Minister Lut emphasized that while fertilizer agreements follow commercial market principles—where final terms depend heavily on competitive pricing and delivery schedules—bilateral dialogue between Moscow and Addis Ababa remains highly constructive.
Russian fertilizer giant PhosAgro is actively refining its supply logistics to streamline shipments and broaden overall trade relations with Ethiopian agricultural enterprises. Addressing Ethiopia’s economic landscape, Lut highlighted that as a primary agricultural country, Ethiopia maintains a strong, continuous demand for mineral fertilizers to sustain farm yields.
Alongside trade discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Ethiopia’s active contributions to the BRICS bloc during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
President Putin underscored Ethiopia’s role as a trusted, long-term African partner following its admission as a full BRICS member on January 1, 2024. As part of efforts to broaden multifaceted strategic ties, President Putin extended an official invitation to Prime Minister Abiy to attend the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow at the end of October 2026, where both leaders are expected to hold further executive consultations.
