Birhanu Nega Highlights Regional Breakdown, Top Scorers, and Improvements in School Success Rates

(NAIROBI, Kenya) — The Ministry of Education has announced that 12.8 percent of students who took this year’s 12th Grade National Examination have passed. Of the schools that had no successful students last year, 684 have produced at least one passing student this year, according to the Ministry.
This year, 70,544 students achieved the passing mark, compared to 8.9 percent of test-takers who passed last year. Minister of Education Professor Birhanu Nega explained in a statement that 563,000 students had registered for the exam, with approximately 550,000 actually taking it.
This year’s results by region showed that 32 percent (18,000) of students passed in Addis Ababa; 10.5 percent (20,000) in Oromia Region; 15,500 in Amhara Region; and 3,146 in Tigray Region.
In the Natural Science stream, the highest score of 591 was achieved by a male student from Adama, while a female student from Agaw scored 583, ranking second. In the Social Science stream, a male student from Dodola scored 576, while a female student from Addis Ababa scored 569, according to Professor Birhanu Nega.
This year, 88 schools saw all their students pass, while 565 schools had no students who passed. Last year, 1,249 schools had no successful students.
Students have been informed that they can check their results starting Monday or Tuesday by visiting the Ministry of Education website.
