Nairobi, Kenya — More than 4,000 delegates have arrived in Addis Ababa to participate in a national dialogue conference that kicked off on Wednesday.
The conference brings together people from across Ethiopia, from local districts to regional levels, as well as Ethiopians living overseas, except for participants from the Tigray region.
Professor Mesfin Araya, chief commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, told Deutsche Welle that more than 4,000 participants will discuss eight topics recently shared by the commission over the course of about a month.
The conference has drawn mixed reactions. Many people welcome its start and hope it will address the issues and concerns Ethiopians face. They also believe the conference could offer solutions to the country’s problems. However, some people remain unconvinced about the conference. They say it does not include all groups and question whether it can truly solve Ethiopia’s problems.
According to Deutsche Welle, a commentator named Mr. Anders said that “a national dialogue must first and foremost be comprehensive or inclusive.” He added that the dialogue “must include critical political forces.” He also pointed out that the conference should have established rules and guidelines through agreement and warned that “the government appointing people it wants and telling them to solve these problems will not solve Ethiopia’s problems.”

This is the last chance for that country has to sort out its political issues that have been bedeviling it since 1974. What I heard is so far the participants have been civil in presenting and debating the topics on the conference agenda. Let’s all hope and pray that this massive conference will end in positive note.
