NAIROBI, Kenya – The Eritrean Afar National Congress (EANC) has issued an urgent appeal for all democratic political parties, civil society organizations, and diverse societal groups within Eritrea to unite and collaborate in pursuing a peaceful and inclusive democratic transition.
The call came at the conclusion of the EANC’s third General Assembly, held last week, which produced a comprehensive eight-page communique outlining the organization’s vision for the nation’s future.
In its statement, the Congress firmly rejected the possibility of Eritrea’s future being built on authoritarian rule, ethnic chauvinism, or the domination of one group over another.
The EANC stressed that lasting stability requires dismantling oppression and fostering genuine dialogue, negotiation, and consensus-building among all stakeholders.
It urged political factions to intensify their efforts toward mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that transparent governance and respect for fundamental rights are non-negotiable prerequisites for national renewal.
The communique also called on international organizations, pan-African bodies, regional blocs, and foreign governments to actively support Eritrea’s pro-democracy movement.
However, the assembly expressed profound disappointment over Eritrea’s recent election to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), condemning it as a diplomatic misstep that rewards a regime widely documented for systematic human rights abuses. The EANC urged the UN to continue its impartial monitoring and documentation of atrocities inside the country, rejecting any trajectory of diplomatic appeasement.
Highlighting the dire humanitarian situation, the statement described the forced displacement of over 200,000 Eritrean Afars as “tragic.”
It detailed how state-backed abuses, land confiscations, and political repression have driven massive population segments into internal displacement or exile, demanding urgent international intervention.
At the core of its political vision, the EANC reiterated its commitment to establishing a federal system of governance that preserves national unity while protecting the cultural, linguistic, identity, economic, and political rights of all historically established nations in Eritrea, with specific safeguards for the Afar community.
The third assembly was notably well-attended, featuring senior politicians, analysts, scholars, traditional leaders, and community elders.
Delegates from Ethiopia, the United Nations, and various partner organizations also participated, signaling growing regional and international interest in the EANC’s platform and the broader calls for democratic renewal in the strategically vital Horn of Africa.
